New Fish Hobbyist/Cichlids - 2008/02/13 12:04 I am fairly new to this and after doing extensive research on the web and asking around, I finally set up a 55 gallon long Cichlid tank. I am running two Emperor 280's,one adjustable heater (200W), crushed coral, dolomite and some regular soft brown gravel, plenty of fake plants and plenty of rock/fake driftwood formations for hiding. I use just regular overhead lighting (flourescent) one on each side and two glass lids. Any suggestions or improvements, etc. would be appreciated. Also, what is the max amount I can safely put in the tank? Right now i have 8 of the (max= 4.5") ones, not sure all there names. I know I have two bumblebee's, two yellow with horizontal stripes, two bluish looking ones (which one is a little lighter than other) and two with reddish spots all over. Thanks. Jamie

Re:New Fish Hobbyist/Cichlids - 2008/02/15 11:48 I think it's absolutely beautiful! My only advice is the following (and neither are critical, just ideas...)

1. Add more rockwork, in shelves, up the back or a corner of a tank. This will give them more territories, more reason to spend time in all areas of the tank and not just the bottom, and also places for babies to hide

2. Research if there are any real plants that you can use. Real plants always look much more beautiful than fake.

Re:New Fish Hobbyist/Cichlids - 2008/02/15 11:59 What kind of rock and a little advice on where and how to stack considering what I have in there now? I can send you more pics if needed. Thanks.

Re:New Fish Hobbyist/Cichlids - 2008/02/15 12:12 I like to use flat rocks, like shale, or other good-sized flat rocks I pull out of rivers. Don't use limestone.

I would try to stack them so the hide your filter tubes, then it looks even more natural!
