Scientific Name: Lamprologus ocellatusCommon Name: Gold ocellatus, shell dweller

Region: Empty shells, Lake Tanganyika, East AfricaSize: Up to 2" (5cm). Females are smaller

Color: Sort of a sandy colored body, with yellow outlines on the dorsal fin. These may also be irridescent blue flecks on the gills or stomach.Water Chemistry: pH 7.8-9.0, GH 12-20 (very hard)Temperature: 74°- 81°F (24° to 27° C)Aggression: This cute looking little cichlid can actually be somewhat aggressive Compatibility: Best kept to themselves in a small species tank. Of course, this is no fun unless you're breeding them, so you can also keep them in a larger aquarium with other Tanganyikan cichlids such as Altolamprologus, Julidochromis, etc.Diet: CarnivorousHow to breed: Males may spawn with more than one female, so keep a larger number of females. The fish will spawn inside the shell the female occupies. You may not even realize that spawning has occured, until all of a sudden you'll see fry near the entrance of the shell. My fish disappeared completely for days, and then sometime later there were many more of them! The fry are very tiny and will therefore require small food. You can always crush up flake food into a fine powder, that always works.General Experience: These shell dwelling cichlids are just generally a very cool fish to keep. Throw a few shells in the tank, and let them pick out their home!

I have roughly a 40 gal tank that use to have 6 shell dwellers in it. They've died off but i want to get some more, can i put a different breed in with them and how many of each type would work in a tank this size? thanks for your help.
species only

I would like to say I had six africans, now down to four. One is a lgrear very aggressive murdering male, killed three corys and one small and one medium fish mates. As he is bigger by far than the others, any options besides segregation and exportation? I have done the tank redecorating and introduction of multiple others at same time. Beautiful fish but man, he ate those corys overnight.
