Profile of the Kenyi Scientific name: Metriaclima lombardoi (Maylandia may also be used, and Pseudotropheus is an older name still used occasionally)
Common name: Kenyi cichlid.
Maximum size: Males can reach a size of 6" on average, females should be about equal or slightly smaller when full grown.
Tank decor: Kenyi, being mbuna, need a rocky tank setup, with lots of caves and hiding places. Sand substrate is preferred for these fish, but gravel and similar substrates can be used.
Temperature: 78 - 82°F
pH: 7.8 - 8.6
Water hardness: Very hard.
Diet: Kenyi are herbivores, so a diet consisting mostly of vegetable and algae foods is best.
Temperment Kenyi are one of the most aggressive mbuna available. Unforunately, because of their pretty, blue juvenile colouring, they are also one of the most commonly available mbuna. The cute little blue babies will grow into 6" monsters, typically taking over a tank and often terrorizing other inhabitants. Given the right size tank, with consideration to proper tankmates, they can be kept with others very successfully with limited aggression.
Colouring: As juveniles, both sexes will be a bright blue with barring. As they mature, males transition from blue, to a golden yellow, with barring becoming very faint at most times. Females will stay blue. Be careful, though - often only the dominant male will change, and subdominant males can retain female colouring to prevent a beating from the king.
Breeding: Kenyi are a very easy fish to breed, as long as proper conditions are maintained. Because of the male's aggressive disposition, its best to have four of five females to a single male. Provide plenty of hiding spots for females to seek out if they need a break from the male's attention. Kenyi are mouthbrooders, so the female will pick up the eggs and carry them in her mouth for a period of 24-30 days, until the young are ready to be released.

Most breeds of cichlids will only have a few fry for the first couple of litters i am not sure about this species in particular but given time to mature i know that yellow labs can go up to around 30 fry. It is also dependant on the size and maturity of the female.

My female is prego right now. Stripped her the other day to see how far along they are. About a week away from leaving her for good. She has 25 right now, her first brood.

I bought two of these blue fish from Meijers stores when they were both under an inch. They look exactly the same still except one is about 5 inches long and the other one didn't grow at all. Is this normal or does a certain sex stay tiny while the other gets almost 5 times the size?
breed cichlids?

Well yeah! This type is a herbivorous fish unlike the Red tailed fish. Kenyi is very easy to breed. Start to breed cichlids using this fish.

Hey guys! I just "adopted" a female Kenyi couple weeks ago. The owner didn't want the fish anymore and I have an empty 30 gal. Quick question though, I bought a male it looks exactly like the female, but a bright yellow not orange. Is this a common colour morph?

Thanks!

algea problems
Justin (Unregistered) 2011-08-25 16:29:28

First u need to know how algea builds up in your tank. the most common is too much sunlight. if u keep your tank infront of a window and u have alot of algea build up or a so called algea bloom (green water)try moving your tank away from the window or invest in a black tint and put it on the side of the tank were the sunlight is entering most. Also to help rid algea there is a solution u can buy called algone. some even use aqarium salt (for freshwater) it also helps to rid algea... 4 kenyi's 4 lab's 1 placo 2 jag catfish 150 gallon. 1 red dragon

Right first lets sort out the algae that you have in the tank. You will need to wrap DARK paper around your tank, manikg sure NO light gets into it. You must not feed your fish. Leave it on for three days, remove and check to see that it is dying off. Algae needs light and food to thrive. If you elimiate the source it should start to die. If necessary re wrap the tank and wait another three days. Your fish can survuve quite happily for a week without food though I do not advise they go any longer than this.Once your algae has died off, or a majority of it, you can then start to keep it under control.Feed your fish once a day, being careful not to overfeed as mentioned in a previous post. Make sure you put some live plants in your tank as these actually feed off the same organisms as the algae and will get the nutrients first. If you want to put in an algae eater, then make sure you get one that doesn't grow big. Some can outgrow a small tank very quickly, so unless you have a very large tank then be very careful.Keep your plants to one that do not require a strong bright light, some only need a few hours, and try not to have your light on for more than 8 hours. (Make sure that you do not have your tank in direct sunlight, this will also make the algae bloom) Whatever you do don't use chemicals, I am against them and you don't really need them for this. Hope this helps, I've been there and done that and know how frustrating it can be! Good Luck,Lisa.

I would like to say you people are crazy, 3000, that is the nebumr of cichlid species out there. has anyone seen this dudes cichlid? the inch per gallon rule or better yet the.75 fish rule, for people with fish having no heads i guess? is not the way to go its just a lazy way for people to sell you fish. take some time and learn a little about the bio-load of a fish. a 12 in oscar poops more in one day than 12 1 in glass fish will poop in 6 mos. still 12 inches of fish right? right. so dude if you have an assorted african like they sell at walmart petco ext. one in a 3 gallon eclipes will be fine. but why not put like a 16 gallon bow in your office somewhere and load that bitch with convicts! you'll love it. if you don't plan on breeding fish, don't worry about gender, just enjoy the fish

I would like to say If you change the water very regrlauly then I'd say two should be ok but 3 would be a bit of an overkill. The way I was taught on how to tell was that males have a blue color on their head region when you are holding the cichlid out of the water and females do not. So when at the fish shop, ask the person who is helping you to see if there is blue. And, males usually have the more vibrant colors than the females.

i have cichlids with a pleco and they seem to leave it alone. i bugoht a larger pleco because i will soon be going in a bigger tank (piranha). i would agree that as long as the pleco is able to hide and is significantly larger then the largest cichlid he will do fine. my pleco i bugoht at 7inches. ask at your pet store they can normaly get you large pleco's they cost almost triple but its worth it if you have agressive fish. i'm lucky enough to have a girlfriend that works at a pet store. http://mdzzqqfmhi.com nmtomez [link=http://hkmnauahv.com]hkmnauahv[/link]

bleach ain't got it goin'.! More frequent water cghnaes might help, but most of these fish come from water that looks like that. I'm not saying you should leave it that way though, because the water gets that way in the Amazon from leaching through the leaf litter on the rain forrest floor. To clear the water try putting a large amount of charcoal in the filtration system somewhere. After about two weeks, repeat. I don't like to run charcoal all of the time, but occasionally it's a good thing. Of course use activated charcoal and rinse it well before adding to the tank. Oh yeah, if your filter system doesn't provide a place for charcoal, just use a large media bag near the outfall of the filter. Hope this helps, good luck.
