Scientific name: Labidochromis caeruleus

Common name: Electric yellows, yellow labs

Region: Lake Malawi

Size: Males up to 5 inches, females up to 4 inches

Electric yellowColor: A striking deep yellow, with black fins and highlights. The males have darker fins, and will tend to have a black strip through the eyes as well. The intensity of the color will vary with quality of breed, as well as maturity. They do not show egg spots, unlike most other mbunas. The black streak along the top of the dorsal fin turns blue on males during breeding.

Water Chemistry: pH: 7.5-8.5,  medium to quite hard

Temperature: 72-83

Aggression: can be somewhat aggressive, especially while breeding. Ironically, they can also be very timid if kept alone, and usually require more bold fish as tankmates to draw them out.

Compatibility: Mbuna Cichlids such as the Auratus, Cobalt Blue, Johanni, Pindani, Red Zebra, Tropheops, and Kenyi. Also synodontis catfish. I almost always keep a few dolphin cichlids in the same tank to draw them out.

Diet: Algae and spirulina flakes are an important staple. They will also eat flake foods, cichlid pellets, freeze-dried bloodworms and small fish. You should be careful with live worms or live brine shrimp, as these can potentially bloat and kill the fish, although the Electric Yellow is less susceptible than other mbunas.

How to breed: Males exhibit more aggressive behavior when ready to breed. You should perform a water change, and rqaise the temperature a couple of degrees. Breed one male with several females.  Electric Yellows are mouth brooders.  The female cares for 10 – 25 eggs in her mouth, and will keep the fry in her mouth for up to 3 weeks.  The female should be isolated after breeding. The fry can be fed brine shrimp, or mashed spirulina powder. You may have to strip the female to prevent her from eating her babies.

General: I absolutely love this fish. They're a pleasure to look at, they have a nice personality, and it always brightens up a tank to have a colony of yellows thriving in it. Also, if you keep them in a fish tank with black aquarium gravel, their colour stands out even more!

As mentioned above, a great fish to keep with the electric yellow is the blue dolphin cichlid. With Hap. ahlis, you can keep a variety of African cichlids, but make sure they're not too much smaller than the haps.

You may want to discuss this in the cichlid forum as well.

What does it mean when thier fins at the bottom turn black?
black fins
justin (Author) 2007-05-07 08:04:43

It means that there's a very good chance they're males, and maturing as well. Is there also a black band through the eye?
Dead Fry
Joff (Unregistered) 2007-07-11 12:52:59

Is it common for female's to kill their fry? I isolated my female a couple of weeks after she was holding. A week later I came home to a tank of dead fry. About 10 of them. They look like they had all been chewed and spat out. Did I do something wrong? Any comments would be appreciated.
dead babies
justin (Author) 2007-07-11 12:57:28

I've never had this happen to me. Perhaps she was frightened - the electric yellows are timid cichlids. Did you have lots of rock cover for her?
Joff (Unregistered) 2007-07-11 13:07:31

Yes. Nice rock cave and other hiding holes. Im thinking that perhaps she didn't have time to settle well into the new tank. Next time I will get her in as soon as she shows. Plus she had become very thin due to not eating, perhaps she got too hungry, but then is usual for them to get thin i guess if they are not feeding the whole time.
question!
kristin (Unregistered) 2007-07-15 22:09:11

i have a electric yellow.. male or female..i don't know. I have it in a 10 gallon tank right now. It is about two inches. I feel like it is bored in there and needs some other fish. I read somewhere that dolphin cichlids are good. is that true??? if so how many? would one be okay??? Or do you think the best would just be to keep the yellow alone??
electric yellows
justin (Author) 2007-07-16 07:43:00

Yes, a dolphin would make a great companion, but I honestly wouldn't put too many in a ten gallon tank!

mashed spirulina powder
brian (Unregistered) 2007-07-26 15:45:26

how do i go about making this? i have spirulina powder already, but it disappeared in the tank when i added it. i'm guessing the "mashing" forces it to stay in a sold shape?

thanks in advance
spirulina
Justin (Unregistered) 2007-07-27 07:05:03

No, I just take some of the powder, mix it with a little water. Then I suck it into a piece of spare aquarium air tubing, insert the hose into the water near the fry, and let it out. They'll quickly find it and gobble it up.

shaney (Unregistered) 2007-09-04 21:49:48

Today my male electric yellow killed ny female i believe because he was ready to mate and she was not. Can anybody tell me if that is normal behaviour
electric yellows
justin (Author) 2007-09-05 07:35:10

unfortunately yes, this happens a lot. The best way to prevent it is to have 3+ females per male.

electric yellow
justin (Author) 2007-09-17 07:19:49

Yes, it could very well be, but it's not easy to say for sure. Wait and see if they breed, that will tell you absolutely
justin
adam (Unregistered) 2007-09-18 13:11:38

when will they breed and how will i know when they have?
breeding
justin (Author) 2007-09-18 13:28:22

They will breed when they're mature enough too, and in good physical condition. I don't know how old your fish are, so I can't tell you exactly when that is.

You will notice that the female is not eating, and that her mouth has a bulge at the bottom.

adam (Unregistered) 2007-09-24 15:16:42

mating
justin (Author) 2007-09-24 15:33:48

they won't be able to mate if she's dead...

adam (Unregistered) 2007-09-26 11:15:11

but can they go back together again
eventualy?
yellows
justin (Author) 2007-09-26 11:44:33

Sure, but when you do you should add some more females to distribute the energy of the male. Also, re-arrange the tank to un-establish territories

fairy cichlids
justin (Author) 2007-10-08 08:27:08

when the time, water conditions, their health, and the decor of the tank are right for it. You're talking about Neolamprologus brichardii, right?
fairy cichlids
adam (Unregistered) 2007-10-09 10:09:53

yes
Is it possible?
Ryan (Unregistered) 2007-10-15 10:48:08

I swear that I have a male yellow lab that is taking the eggs into his mouth rather than the female taking the eggs into her mouth. He has strong black fins and a strip through the eye. Is that possible for this "male" to be a female in disguise? This has happened for a few months, and no batch of eggs has become fry.
yellow lab
justin (Author) 2007-10-15 10:49:48

yeah, it's possible that it's a strongly colored female

Anonymous (Unregistered) 2007-11-11 14:18:03

if see is holding eggs in her mouth
move her in to another tank (planted if you can or the others will try to make a meal out of them. make sure you dont cause her to much stress moving her if so she'll
have dark stripes.
