Many people start off keeping cichlids in their aquarium because of their beauty. With the variety of colors and shapes, it's about as close to a saltwater fish tank that you can get, without the salt!

But before long, most people become interested in breding cichlids, rather than just having them. Quite often this is due to the cichlids breeding without any intervention on the aquarist's part, who thereafter becomes interested in keeping the next batch of fry.

By and large, the majority of African cichlids are mouthbrooders. This means that the eggs are actually brooded in one of the parents' mouth - typically the female cichlid's mouth. Other types of cichlids (shelldwellers for example) will be considered in other articles. But how do you get your cichlids to breed? How can you protect the female, and ensure that the eggs hatch successfully? And then how do you protect the young from hungry predators?

The first step in breeding cichlids is to obtain fish that will breed. While this may seem obvious, it's not as simple as obtaining a male and female of the same species of tropical fish. With African cichlids, it's much better to obtain a harem, quite often referred to as a breeding colony. If you only have a pair, the male may be too aggressive towards the one available female, resulting in stress and potential death.

When you have your breeding colony, you'll want to give them a good environment. Have plenty of caves, rocks, shelves and crevices that the cichlids can choose as their territory and breeding ground. Don't bother with aquarium plants, they'll only be removed by the cichlids!

To get your African cichlids in breeding condition, you need to feed them well. I've always found spirulina flakes to be excellent quality food, as well as the occasional earthworm.

When the fish are ready to breed, you'll notice the male chase the female and do a mating dance, which consists of shimmying in front of the female. The female will drop eggs, and then proceed to pick them up in her mouth. The male will fertilize them. It is theorized that this is where the 'egg spots' come into play. The egg spots are the small round yellowish spots on the male's anal fin. Many feel that when the male shimmies, these look like eggs that the female hasn't yet collected. She attempts to, and the eggs that are in her mouth are able to be fertilized by the male.

The process will be repeated a number of times, until the female loses interest (just like people!). If the eggs weren't properly fertilized, they will be disposed of. If they're fertilized, they will be kept until the eggs are hatched and the yolk sacks have disappeared. This can take from three to five weeks.

If you want to keep the baby cichlids, I strongly suggest that you remove the female to a comfortable tank of her own. This can be a smaller tank, with some rockwork for her to hide in. You don't need to feed her, although when the eggs hatch (you'll see the wigglers in her mouth) you may want to toss in a very small amount of flake food. She may pick at it for the sake of the fry. There will be a follow-up article explaining how to strip the female cichlid, a process necessary if she won't release the eggs or if she eats them.

To feed the babies, you can crush up some flake food into a fine powder. Take a little, mix it with water. Then suck it into a straw of piece of aquarium tubing. Then insert it into the water near the swimming cichlid fry, and release it for them to eat.

Allow the female cichlid to feed back to health before putting her back in the tank. Also, try to keep the babies with cichlids of the same size, lest they become food!

Great info, I just had "babies" one didn't make it so we called the other Nemo. I've made a safe aquarium inside the old which is working well.

Hi,
i just noticed that i have 1 baby fish in the tank to my surprise , i have had these 2- ciclids for almost a year, with 1- pleco, i was wandering what if anything should i do, i heard that ciclids protect there young, i dont have any other fish in there . should i remove the baby? Help need advise, i noticed this on valentines day, believeit or not. thanks please advise asap.
to remove or not
justin (Author) 2007-02-15 10:36:08

You have to decide if it's worth tearing up the tank to rescue one small fish that has survived thus far. If you leave him in the aquarium, he may live on. And no matter what, you know that your cichlids are now breeding, so there will be more babies!

Just what this trade needs, a bunch of cross breeds. Just like the dog industrie. Nothing pur bred anymore
Whatever
Kay (Unregistered) 2008-08-18 18:15:55

Oh yeah, because I specifically bought cichlids to breed and all. They CHOSE to and I'm not killing off the babies just because they don't meet blue blood standard.
Cross breeds
Frontosa (Registered) 2008-10-22 16:57:12

It's one thing if someone is purposfully cross breeding and then selling the offspring without making it known, but if someone is lucky enough to have their fish breed without even trying what is the harm?! He didn't say jack about selling anything into "the trade", and it's only one little offspring. I think you should chill out a little Jason.
to remove or not
Simon (Unregistered) 2009-02-05 17:06:35

Isn't it a proven theory, that when a gene pool is mixed that the inherient problems are less likely to manifest? The dog 'Industry' as you put it is rife with dogs who have genetic faults, which breeders and judges deem 'perfect'. Before I start name calling I think you should wind your neck in and be a little bit more informed.
damien (Unregistered) 2011-06-04 08:24:21

There is a huge difference between dog breeds and fish breeds. Over time PEOPLE have been the major cause for the huge variation in breeds of dogs. We have bred them for fighting or for hunting and consequently while selecting for certain traits they have inherited bad traits. The fish have evolved in the wild. They have reached the temperment and colour they are via the BEST traits being carried on. please don't FUCK UP the cichlid gene pool. Just look at the wild caught cichlids and those sold commercially and we see the horrid effects of line breeding.
Ken (Unregistered) 2011-09-23 01:11:42

your not going to "FUCK UP" the gene pool. If you cross breed Keep them for a seperate tank or for a re pal who wants them. DO NOT SELL THEM! but, I dont see a point in flushing them either! I have a couple of different types of peacocks that are crossbreeding constantly, my friend collects hybrids some people do! anyhow, their not going back into the wild to create a bunch of mutated beasts so all you "HOBBYISTS" who think that its bad, should just chill the fuck out. like I said as long as people keep them to their selves and dont sell them or try to pass them off as "blue bloods" who really gives a shit? does it affect you? no! so back off.
Gene Pool?
Jess (Unregistered) 2011-11-16 19:37:49

How is one going to f*** up the gene pool if the cichlids are breeding on their own with no encouragement from the fish keeper? Isn't that what animals do? They breed with their chosen mate. It's only when people encourage species to breed or even artificially inseminate them that they can be accused of tampering with the gene pool. If the fish...or any other animal for that matter...chooses to breed of it's own accord, then that must mean that both fish have good "genetics" and they have chosen to breed with each other.

Well i have a bunch of ciclids myself and i use smaller stones in my tank. They make it perfect for the babies to live within the small rocks and protect them from getting eatin. I wouldnt try to take them out. Instead get flat rocks and stack them together so that no large fish can get in between.
Anonymous (Unregistered) 2010-05-06 20:50:18

Well with my fish i put him in a little tank that goes into the tank you have but he is by himself. And if you have fish mating you should put them in there so then the eggs drop in one area instead of all over the tank.

justin (Author) 2007-02-18 09:03:45

It entirely depends on the cichlids species. Many Mbuna males are larger, with egg spots on their anal fin. With many Central American cichlids, the males are larger and more colorful, and with longer, pointier fins. You have to read up on your specific cichlid.

fertilized or not
Al (Unregistered) 2007-02-28 01:05:31

Hi all, I have a tank with a blood parrot, a bala shark, and two malawi cichlids. The two malawi cichlids were breeding approximately two weeks ago which resulted with the female with a enlarged throat area and is always hiding. Because I am away from my tank, I couldn't examine the behaviour or events so I am unsure if the eggs are fertilized or not. I transferred the female to a 30 gal on her own where she currently resides with a mouthful of what I hope to be fertilized eggs. I was wondering if anyone can confirm that those eggs are fertilized or not with the information given. Thank you.
fertilized cichlid eggs
Justin (Unregistered) 2007-02-28 06:08:39

If the female holds onto the eggs for any length of time, then yes, they're most likely fertilized. If it's been more than a week, than it's almost definite.
Al (Unregistered) 2007-02-28 20:24:27

Thank you for your reply, during this period of time is it necessary to feed the cichlid and also, how long should I expect the female to release the fry?
babies
Justin (Unregistered) 2007-02-28 20:50:27

No, you shouldn't need to feed her. The female usually releases them in about 3 weeks or so.
fertilized
steph (Unregistered) 2011-09-14 15:20:21

if the eggs are an orangey to brown colour this means they are fertilised if they are white they are more than likely not

Recently, the same female mbuna cichlid mentioned in above topics has been acting strangly in her own tank. By this, I mean she is quite active instead of hiding and constantly shakes her face towards the glass of the tank. I was wondering if this is normal behavior or if there is something wrong. Also

I have just recently realized that my female was caring eggs, and by recently I mean that the female has a mouth full of eggs this morning. How can I feed her without killing or harming the eggs and her in the process? This is the first time I have ever had a fish carry eggs.
rico (Unregistered) 2008-01-25 11:59:41

you cant feed her dont temp her by putting feeder fish in your tank it would make her want to spit her eggs out and eat before she mates and you notice taht her egg shute is out feed her brine shrimp and and other frozen foods the protien will make her eggs hatch faster and they grow up faster i have been doing this for 3 years now and it never fails

how to get them out
justin (Author) 2007-05-13 16:08:00

basically, the only way to get them out is to take everything out of the tank first

I would leave them...
Anonymous (Unregistered) 2009-01-30 23:50:23

Get a water bottle small enough that the adults can't get in it. Cut the bottle off at the top right before it starts to taper. Flip the top of the bottle over and place in in the remaining bottle creating a funnel opening. Set in in the bottom of the tank with a piece of fishing string attached so you can pull it up. They will swim down the funnel into the bottle and will not be able to find there way out. You don't have to sit and watch it just put in in and come back and check later or even the next day.

Well, in a community tank, it's unlikely that too many babies will survive. Next time it happens, take her out as soon as you notice it, and put her in her own tank. Then you'll be able to keep the babies.

If she's swallowing them each time, then you can always strip the eggs and hatch them yourself

This article contains helpful tips, advice and techniques for stripping the eggs from an african cichlid mothbrooder. It includes step-by-step instructions about how to strip african cichlid eggs without harming the mother, equipment needed for a good fry tank and how to use an artificial incubater. The act of striping the fish of her eggs is a complicated process that involves a multitude of equipment and good timing.

The only fish you can strip are mouth brooders. The only ones that I am familiar with are African cichlids, although I am certain that the same technique can be used for other types of mouth brooding fish. A true naturalist would want the pair of fish to release the fry naturally in a perfect environment, without predators or parental problems to endanger the baby fish. This would be the best way to have fish spawn because I believe the fry learn or "it" is imprinted onto them, that this natural act makes them better parents. The parents take care of the eggs and after hatching, they take better care of the fry.

Generally the father patrols the perimeter to keep potential problems away, while the mother cares for and nurtures the young fish. If danger enters the vicinity the mother takes the fry back into her mouth, holding them in her boucle cavity, until the danger passes, she then releases them to feed and explore the area. This will continue until the pair is ready to spawn again, which can be anywhere from a few weeks to a few months. At this time they will either chase the fry away or eat them.

In an aquarium, I like to keep the mother and babies in a separate tank, with water from the spawning tank, same temperature and pH, for ten (10) days. This gives the mother a chance to build her strength up and she will not be harassed by other fish. It also provides time for the bonding process between parent and offspring. This is where the imprinting, teaching, learning, whatever you want to call "it", between parent and fry that imparts knowledge and procedures that ensures good parenting. Fry that are stripped have to re-learn this via heredity and trial and error methodology.

Too bad we don’t live in a perfect world. For the aquarist there are many times when young fish are just bad parents or they were stripped from their parents prior to knowing how to be a good parent. In these cases the aquarist does not want to lose a valuable fish that is holding equally valuable fry. In many instances young parents eat or spit out their eggs prior to hatching because the male didn’t fertilize the eggs, the mother is being harassed by other fish, or the mother fish may get hungry and the instinct to not eat hasn’t taken control yet. The aquarist may determine that he hasn’t another tank for holding the mother and fry, and/or other fish would eat the fry, if left in the original tank. The aquarist may realize that the faster he removes the eggs or fry the faster the parents will spawn again, thus increasing his stock of fry, which to him is like money in the bank. Whatever the reason, the aquarist has determined that the mother fish will be stripped of her eggs or fry. Now, how is this accomplished – successfully?

The equipment that is needed:

Hatchery tank & plastic bottles – I prefer a 10 gallon high (8" W X 16" L X 17" H). This size tank is hard to find. I like this size tank because (thanks to Tom Miglio) it can fit a portion of a Coca Cola™ plastic case holder, that is cut or sawed down to have fit 3, 2 liter plastic bottles in the large holes and 3, 1 liter or smaller plastic bottles in the small holes. In this way you can have 6 hatchery containers working simultaneously. With this method rigid airline tubing is needed with an inch or so of flexible airline tubing at the end that the airstone will go into. It is important that the airstone be at the very bottom of the plastic bottle in order for the air bubbles to move the eggs and keep them in constant motion. Use three (3) sponge filter stands to keep the Coca Cola plastic case holder off the bottom of the tank.

Another way of hatching eggs is through the use of a 1 liter plastic bottle that is aquarium sealant is applied to the bottom of the bottle and to a flat rock or piece of slate. A small hole is made at the base of the bottle where flexible airline tubing is inserted, this is worked up to the top of the bottle (where the cap usually goes) and an airstone is inserted into the tubing. The tubing is then drawn down to the base of the bottle and aquarium sealant is applied to the exterior of the hole where the tubing went in, to ensure the water from inside the bottle does not leak out. It is important that the airstone be at the very bottom of the plastic bottle in order for the air bubbles to move the eggs and keep the eggs in constant motion.

I learned this method from Joe Ferdenzi - have a 2 liter plastic bottle, invert it, cut the bottom off where the indentations start to make it a flat bottom, get a black plastic bottle holder that the 2 liter bottle fits into (it has a flat bottom with 4 holes on the edges and is 1/ 2 inches high). Place this plastic bottom over the bottom of the plastic bottle that you cut the bottom off so it will fit like a new bottom. Get a piece of rigid, flat plastic, place it on the top of the bottle and use aquarium sealant to secure the inverted bottle to the flat plastic piece. Get a piece of rigid airline tubing with a inch of flexible airline tubing at the end that an airstone will go into, insert the rigid tubing through one of the holes in the base of the black plastic bottle holder. It is important that the airstone be at the very bottom of the plastic bottle in order for the air bubbles to move the eggs and keep the eggs in constant motion.

With the last two methods using single bottles, a regular 20 gallon tank (13" W X 17" H X 24" L) would suffice. You need tanks of this size to keep the water temperature the same, both inside and outside the bottle and the bottle should be 60% filled with the original tank water. It is very important to ensure the eggs or fry have the exact same water conditions as in the tank they came from.

The plastic hatchery bottle is representing mom’s mouth as she would constantly rotate the eggs and/or fry with their yolk sack. This ensures that each egg obtains equal amount of water, heat and rotation to have a successful egg incubation.

Important note – when using aquarium sealant always apply it in an open, air circulating area and always let the applied sealant dry and harden for 2 days.

Net – the net must be large enough to catch and hold the mother fish, yet the holes must be small enough so that the eggs do not fall through. I recommend the use of two nets, because the mother must be caught quickly before she tires and panics where she might eat the eggs or fry or worse spit them out into the tank full of hungry predators.

Heater – this is one of the most important devices you can buy for your baby fish. DO NOT GO FOR A CHEAP HEATER. I prefer submersible heaters such as Ebo-Jager or other high quality heaters. Always wrap airline tubing around the heater coil so that if fry swim against the heater they won’t disintegrate. Baby fish are drawn to heaters because of its light and the heat given off, the problem is It works like a moth to a bug zapper. If you have airline tubing around the heaters coil it won’t burn the fish. The airline tubing will not effect the temperature of the tank or harm the heater.

Acriflavine or Methylene Blue – anti-fungus medicine. With Acriflavine you turn the water yellow and also your fingers and with Methylene Blue you turn the water blue and also your fingers. Both are manufactured by Kordon. This is a must for eggs that haven’t started developing yet. Nothing hits eggs faster than fungus. Unfertilized eggs are the first to be hit with fungus and because of the sticky quality of the eggs the fungus will attack fertile eggs as well. I recommend using as little of the medication as possible. One half of a drop to one drop maximum; you want a slight discoloration of the water in the plastic bottle. After a day or so, when the eggs start developing, start water changes of 10 - 20%, to reduce the amount of anti-fungus medicine in the bottle and always use water from the original tank to refill the hatchery bottle. Once the embryo has fully developed and is about to hatch, have clean water from the original tank, with no medication in it, for the fry to emerge into.

Aerator – have a good quality aerator that can easily put air into a couple of these bottles. Have the airline tubing that connects to the aerator work with a gang valve. In this way the air bubbles can be controlled for less or greater intensity. This control of the air bubbles will be crucial to the correct tumbling of the eggs. Too great of an air flow and the eggs become damaged and break by bouncing around too much. If there is not enough airflow then the eggs are not moving and they stay in one place, this prevents the eggs to have a continuous flow of water and air flowing around the egg, which destroys the embryo.

Container to hold eggs I prefer a small container such as a plastic soup container from a Chinese restaurant. You could also use something the size of a Betta bowl. Once you strip the fish of her eggs and the eggs go into the net you need to move them from the net into this holding container. I prefer not to have the eggs hit the air. Submerse the container into the tank and then move the net containing the eggs over the container and then invert the net so the eggs drop into the container, which has the water from the tank in the container. Now you can remove the eggs from the tank safely and put them into the hatchery bottle.

All right, now you have all the ingredients so you are ready to catch the moma fish and strip her of the eggs. Using two nets in a slow fashion try to...
Eggs Floating In Tank

I have a 30 gallon tank with 6 cichlids. I just noticed last night there are several what appear to be egg sacs floating around in the tank. One of my cichlids is hiding inside a log, and doesn't come out much. It has also dug under the log. My question is, are the eggs viable? I don't want to waste time with them if they won't hatch, but I also do not want to lose any fish.

my fiance and I are new to cichlids so we are educating ourselves, however the female was pregnant however the babies are no longer in her mouth but we have notice a white sac embedded in one of the rocks and several fish occasional swim in the rock and stare at it. Are these the eggs that were in her mouth and is it going to hatch in the rock and when will it hatch? All the fish in the tank are cichlids majority are males. We want the babies to survive we have been monitoring them but not sure if we are looking at an egg sac (white). Advice is needed and appreciated :)

When the females are holding babies in their mouth, they won't eat. You have to watch because the babies can die if kept in the mouth too long. I bought some breeding nets and put one female in there, I noticed one baby at first and she sucked him back up. The next morning about a dozen babies were swimming around, and I was able to remove her. I had another female whose chin was hanging down, and I put her in a seperate breeding net - after a week she still would not release the babies and her chin was getting bigger. I held her gently and squeezed her cheeks and 27 babies came out! 4 had died, but the rest seem quite healthy! All the babies are doing great and growing quickly! Good luck!

How do I know if a fish is carrying eggs in its mouth. I just noticed that one of my fish's mouth looks swollen and it hasn't been wanting to eat. I don't know the sex of my fish. I have a 40 gal tank with 8 aprox 2 to 3 inc cichlids. I bought the tank from someone that had the fish and wanted them to have a home since she was moving. I bought the tank for a 12 inch pleco that got to big for our office tank. Yesterday I found a striped baby swimmi ng around in the plants. he looks about an inch or a little longer and I see him eating the freeze dried brine shrimp I put in. no one seems to bother him and I want to move everyone to a 55 gal tank. any advise would be very helpful. This is my first exp with the fish. I've had the tank and fish for about 6 to 7 month now.

ADAM 1982 (Registered) 2008-02-14 17:35:47

I have a male kenyi cichlid and a female golden cichlid which have been breeding together for the last 5 months is this odd/rare? As the male is quite a bit larger than the female she only seems to have 1 baby a month is this also odd? The oldest baby (i have 3 and a further 2 died/disapeared) is 5-6 months old now and has been white (with black markings) since birth as have the other 2 even though the male parent is yellow and the female parent is black and yellow when do you think any colour will come into the fish if at all. These are the only fish in my tank except for 1 bristle nosed plec, 2 comon plecs and 2 small catfish.

Cheers.

i know i can't seem to download pics either. The max for a pic is like 50 and the pics i have are like in the 300's. I can't resize them to be 50kb!! Its impossible...
latingeminigrl (Unregistered) 2008-02-22 12:15:11

OK I figured out how to upload pics. You have to upload them onto photobucket and then you resize them to email size and then you copy and paste the code onto the comment box instead of the img box. You can do more then one that way :)

I have aggressive African Chichlids, class g, and I don't think they are all the same type but anyway, I bought a bigger afican chichlid to be an equalizer to my tank because I have one severely aggressive fish that has been killing certain ones of my fish. I noticed yesterday that my big chichlid was digging a hole in the rocks in the front on the tank. After the hole was completely clear of the rocks my little white chichlid started guarding the hole. Normally, that one isn't aggressive but its been chasing my two yellow(with stripes) ones around and the big one chases both yellow fish too! then I noticed that the white and big fish started rubbing on everything in the tank and doing this weird little shaking thing with its body. Can you tell what they are doing and what I should be watching for? Thanks!!

I have 4 peacock, 2 tilapias, 2 firemouth, 2 electric yellows, and a sucker fish all in a 55 gallon tank. I think one of the peacocks is carrying eggs but not sure. Her mouth is bigger than normal and the one peacock that we know is a male has been doing his dances around her and protects the corner of the tank where he has moved the rocks. He won't let any of the other fish around her except the sucker fish. But she runs from him. I have read some of the forums and I have looked for the eggs on the male anal fin and I dont see anything. Does this mean he has already fertilized them? Her mouth wasnt bigger yesterday....does it happen that quick? She never quits moving her mouth, it almost looks like a humans mouth when chewing food thats the best I can describe it. Also the firemouths which are usually very active are hiding more than they are out but not hiding together, could this be because of the peacock male protecting the corner they usually claim? We have only had our fish about a week and a half and we are first time fish owners. I don't have another tank to transfer her to if she is pregnant, what should I do? Should I continue the feedings normally for the other fish? Can I clean the tank? Any info would be helpful.
Cichlid babies
Christina (Unregistered) 2008-03-23 21:49:58

I was given about a dozen kenyi cichlids almost a year ago which were babies. They have started breeding, and I currently have about 40 babies which are growing very rapidly. I have two breeding nets which are housing each group and I noticed a couple more females today have babies in their mouths! One of the females who had babies a couple weeks ago was afraid to release them, so I had to hold her cheeks open to allow the babies to swim out, and ended up with 21 live babies and about 4 dead ones! So how long do they have to remain in breeding boxes?

Breeding Midas Cichlids
John (Unregistered) 2008-04-17 20:27:31

Anyone have any tips on how to promote male fertilization in a Midas? I have a female that lays eggs every other month it seems, just purchased a smaller male, but I'm not confident it's mature, they're breeding, or that I'm 100% confident he's indeed a male. I was told that the bottom fin is rounded on male Midas cichlids, which could be true cause the females's is very long and pointed. Any truth to this and please advise on suggestion for success. When is a male to be deemed mature for breeding, how many years on average? The female is twelve inches + and solid orange. The male about 5" and yellow with blotches of white. Thanks in advance, any guidance is appreciated!!!

I kind of need to move them BY THE 25TH, and i also need to know if i can move them at all. The guy asking obviously isn't serious, he's just trying to troll to get people to freak out that he would eat a fish that most people reading would consider a pet. In reality though, there are parts of the world where large cichlids are the main source of meat for the locals, and drive a large portion of the local economy.

Why would you do it? The same reason you would eat any other form of seafood or meat. Though I would never eat an aquarium raised fish, simply due to the increased levels of pollutants from living in an enclosed ecosystem.

Sounds like you have an unhealthy fish. The fish in question might be a victim of constant harrasment by the other cichlids. Place it in another tank and let it recover back its health and then re-introduce it back. You will need to do this just before the lights go off at night so that is gets settled in with the least amount of chance it can be bullied.

Malawi cichlids are the collective term for all of the cichlids found in Lake Malawi. These cichlids come in various colouration which does include yellow and blue.

If you do decide to keep cichlids I am sure that you will get a lot of enjoyment from this. As they are not only colourful they also have very intresting habits which you will be able to witness.

Suggestion: Keep at least 1male and 2-3females(even more) of the same species.

If you want to keep the fry then you will need to put that female in a separate tank. If you dont want the fry then you can just leave her where she is until she lets go of the fry. The fry will likely be eaten by her or the other cichlids.

It sounds like it could be a hybrid unless your 2 bumblebees are a male and a female. The Only way to tell for sure is to wait until it reaches a certain size so that you can see its colouration.
Yukozunah (Unregistered) 2011-05-30 21:13:40

If the bumblebee's mated, the male and female colorations would have displayed already. If they're both the same color, they're too young to breed.

My fish have been living and breeding together for years. I'm on my 4th generation and I never remove the fry. It is recommended however to have plenty of hiding spots for the fry.

Crazy situation.

I bought two cichlids almost exactly two years ago. Thought they were both convict cichlids. One became huge and had no stripes. He got so big, we traded him back to pet store over a year ago.

Yesterday I discovered 10 tiny cichlid babies.

Is it possible for a cichlid to hold fertilized eggs for over a year?? I can't find any information on it.

Thank you

Katherine (Unregistered) 2009-04-10 02:10:46

A documentary on angler fish mentioned something like this. Female fish can "store" fertilization and use it when they are ready. So yes, your fish DID hold on to it for a year.

I am trying to learn as much as I can about african cichlids. Since I don't want babies I was thinking about buying 5 different cichlids. Is that a good idea? I just don't want them killing each other and don't want a tank full of babies. I am still working on setting up my tank so I thought I should carefully learn about the breed. What do you think?

Apparently they are now big enough to breed as I found 6 fry in the tank and a female holding. i have separated the female. I have seven cichlids. I bought several different ones, was not trying to breed. About eight months later I found a baby. well the female I think is carrying again(the last time, we just thought she was sick and was going to die) Her mouth has dropped and gills stay out, but shes a small one, so I cant really see in her mouth. Does she have babies? I have a small tank I can put her in. But, when? If she has babies, I don't want to loose them. Now that have one, I'm excited to have more. It's been fun watching this little guy grow. Thanks

My Aulonocara Peacock female appeared to be pregnant so I moved here to a holding tank to hatch the younglings. However, she has now dropped 20-30 eggs at the bottom of the new tank. I am trying to determine what to do about these eggs. Did she release the fertilized eggs from her mouth? Or could this be another batch that she was trying to get fertilized. Thoughts?

Im pretty sure that they are not fertilized. the main majority of african cichlids are mouth brooders and release their babies after they hatch.

Hi, I have a 72gal bofront tank with 5 aferican cichlids, a catfish and a sukker. We noticed a month or so ago that we had babies!! I read a lot on this site and decided to let nature do its thing and leave them in there. they are now about or almost an inch. THIS MORNING i noticed MORE! they are a quarter of the size and all the same color (some with more or darker stripes however). I have ideas of who is breeding but have not seen it... i didnt even get to see the mouthbrooding. I think my male mouthed the babies but not possitive. So I read they breed a lot with good conditions but geez! at what point would I have too many? Im kinda freaked out about the stripping thing but maybe that would be nessary. Im not too interested in selling them but possibly setting up another tank. Oh also can anyone reccomend a book on this? I would like to better identify male/female and so on. THX!

Hi, I've recently discovered fish eggs, on the inside of a vertical loghouse decoration, while cleaning my 10 gallon tank. I took the decoration out to have it cleaned, and as I did this, I noticed eggs on the inside! I was stunned of course, haha! I immediately put the loghouse back into the tank. And, I continued to clean the unwanted food at the bottom. My question is: Can the tank be cleaned while there are eggs in it? Did I harm them by removing them from the water?

I have been noticing lately my female & male African chichlids have been acting strangely. After reading all the info on here I have to the conclusion they are breeding! I am a newbie at breeding fish & appreciate all the info I can get! My male Oscar has been only nibbling food here & there while my female has been eating all the food I put in the tank. Also my female is "building" a nest by removing gravel from the bottom of the tank to make a circle. My male has been helping her build this nest by periodically.helping to remove gravel.I have no other fish in the tank. The male has been pretty much staying in one place in our 55gal tank except to remove gravel. Im excited to see what happens next! From reading the article & responses the eggs should be fertilized next?! The female is not staying in the nest much right now. I only have plants in the tank b/c when I had other rocks & decorations the fish would've het aggressive & swim fast & hurt themselves on it.

If anyone has any good advice, could you please take time to share!!
