? - 2007/05/28 16:40 Didn't know how to title this , so here goes. I have three cichlids , one of them seems to be slow on the food collection these last few days. Though it was the smallest fish it was agressive and actually pushed around the second biggest fish. Getting its share was no prob. It just seems slow at gathering the food , so the other ones get it all. I am feeding them little cichlid log type pellets. Used to be I could make sure they each got one but this one takes to long to check it out , so misses out.

Another thing with this fish is that it took over the light house and excavated much of the shell from under it and has made some new exits. After this last feeding I saw it near one of the back entrances near the second biggest and it was shaking as the other did to. Dunno if it was some kind of mateing breeding thing or not. Also the fish in question turned very pale during that shakeing from the usual deep color blue/purple type color with red top fin that also has some blue on the end. Then got dark again. The fish seems healthy, but also seems to show frustration after the feedings. Not like I am not trying to make sure it gets it chance to the food, seems to snob it or check it out for to long and looses.

What might be up with this fish and its behavior change , any ideas ?

Re:? - 2007/05/28 16:52 The first thing that comes to mind is that the smaller cichlid is a female. The shaking is indeed a mating dance, and if she's not eating, there's a good chance that they've bred, and she's carrying eggs in her mouth. Watch the mouth for the next few days, and see if it bulges out slightly at the bottom. She will also get thinner.

If you really want to test if they're eating, get some small earth worms, and dangle them in the tank one by one. There's no way a cichlid can resist worms!

Re:? - 2007/05/28 17:02 I'll try the worms... I just got her to eat. Like I said it/she seems to get frustrated ater he feedings , so I go back and it will usually get one, but if any of the other fish are around , good chance they will get it, so I wait. The other ones eat like pigs, and I get worried that I will feed them to much. Wil they eat them selves to death by stuffing? lol.

Only had this prob since the little one is being fussy. Bfore I could easily make sure each fish got one or two pellets.

Re:? - 2007/05/29 02:26 If they're round in any way, then yeah, they're fed too much. I've never had one die from over-eating, but there are always problems when fish are fed too often and there's food leftover in the tank to rot
