Mixing african with central and south american? - 2009/12/29 17:47 Ok so I have a 75 gallon tank in it I have a redxred zebra, an electric blue johanni, a yellow lab, a firemouth a blue acara, and a green sverum so far all are doing fine and all are about 3 or 4 inches in length there are plenty of caves and plants. Will I have to seperate them later on?
also there is a green spotted puffer a gold gourami and a marble and gold veil angel in the tank. So far I have not had any problems oh and a blue dragon goby but he hardly comes out of his cave

Re:Mixing african with central and south american? - 2009/12/30 00:11 Input from a novice! I have a Red Zebra, Elec Blue Johanni, Elec Yellow, Sunshine Peacock and Jack.

I had the same question because I found out after I bought the fish that you weren't supposed to mix Africans and New World. But no one could tell me why other than just don't do it! At least that was the case until about two weeks ago. I finally found someone that could give me a decent answer. He was a pet store manager and has been in the biz for ten years. He said that the Africans and New Worlds like different water (hard/soft) but he said most importantly the size! the new worlds tend to get much larger than the Africans and as you know, size is everything in the water. So I was pretty happy with that answer because my Jack is dominating the Africans though I bought them all at the same time he has out grown them this far. So in a year or so I would expect that I will have to give him away. Much like me it seems you only have one aggressive fish so your tank might be o.k. especially if you have space and hidding spots.

Re:Mixing african with central and south american? - 2010/05/18 21:55 From my experience, mixing African with Central/South American cichlids is quite deadly. When I had an all African cichlid tank, they were all aggressive, but were okay together. I put a Jack Dempsey in with them and within a day, he was almost eaten alive.

I've also learned that with Gouramis, unless they are quick enough to run from cichlids, they will lose most of their fins. Having lots of plants seemed to help, until they were fighting over certain plants.

I would seriously consider inserting glass dividers within your tank or separating the different fish into other tanks. A fishkeeper can really only learn by experience and each fish and its temperament is unique, so you could keep on your course, but just be cautious and constantly check on them... or you might lose a few.
