cichlid questions? - 2009/02/01 15:33 I am new to cichlid fish, and am now taking care of a 50 gallon tank at a local hospital.
should i have an under gravel filter for a tank this size? if so any recomendations will help.and i read somewhere that if you adjust the water temp. up or down it will stop or slow the breading? what kind of bottom feeders do well with these fish? and are snails ok?

Re:cichlid questions? - 2009/02/02 17:32 Generally under gravel filter does work very well when keeping cichlids as this fish likes to dig. As it digs it will expose the UGF which will undermine its capacity to do its filtering properly. I recommend any internal canister filter or even an external canister which has been serving my tanks effectively.

Lowering the tempreture will not only supress their apetite but also their breeding.

I have a Synodontis Eupterus, common bristlenose and a few clown loaches in different tanks. Snails is not a good combo when keeping loaches as they will make a meal of the snails.

Hope this helps.

Re:cichlid questions? - 2009/03/30 13:58 Hi, I was wondering if those fish you have in with the clown loaches are types of cichlids or other fish. I have cichlids and would like to get some snails and bottom feeders like loaches to help clean up the tank, but I have read that you can't keep anything but cichlids with cichlids. I was just wondering if you or anyone else has found this to be true. If not, what are some good tank mates for cichlids.
