telling the gender - 2009/02/17 16:19 I am new to Africans and was wondering if anyone could tell me if there is a way to tell my females from the males? Distinguishing marks, fins, anything?

Difficult question really...

They say one factor is egg spots - if your cichlid has egg spots there is a high possibility it might be male. also if your fish has pointed/sharper fins then it might be male.

From experience the above guide is not really reliable as I have had cichlids with egg spots on their pointed fins that have held eggs.

Also depending on the species of the cichlid if your fish is dimorphic then the less colourful one would be a female.

Which cichlid do you have?

Re:telling the gender - 2009/03/25 16:01 the easiest way to sex a fish other then telling by it's colors at maturity is to net the fish. Look directly behind it anus . If the circle is the same size as the anus then it's a male and if that circle is larger then the anus ,it's more than likely a female .

male oo
female oO
