Finiky Convict pair - 2009/03/07 05:33 Hey all,

New to the forum and this is my first post. I've Searched wide and low on the feeding habits of the new pair of Convicts I purchased 4 days ago. So far they're refusing to eat anything including the plants I have in the tank, which as I understand they do like to sometimes eat them.

I have had alot of luck with Jack Dempsy's and Oscars in the past, so chiclids are not entirely a new concept to me.

Water chemical levels are all within tolerances, I also understand they require a little less protein level then their african cousins so feed them mostly between 30% - 39% protein level in their food.. I'ved tried shrimp, chiclid flakes, sinking pellet food (shrimp based), and even as a last resort I put in a vacation feeder block to see if they at all would nibble off it.

I know 4 days is not a big stretch probably for fish not to eat, but I'm concerened they may just starve themselves to death.

They seem playful and come to the glass when i'm near, they have plenty of hiding spots and their colors are vibrant..

Any recommendations or should I wait it out and quit worrying so much?

Re:Finiky Convict pair - 2009/03/09 13:58 I found a method to get the Chiclids to eat, although it's not ideal.

For some reason they will not go near the surface of the water except for about a inch below and then stop.

So I stuck some chiclid pellets on the intake of the filter and they seem to eat it in this fashion and pick them off one at a time.

Any way to encourage them to goto the surface that anyone can think of?

I've been considering setting up a guppy tank to provide them with live food since I don't trust store bought live food.
