New Cichlid Tank - Fish and substrate selection - 2008/11/30 17:21 So I've lurked about the forums, read a lot of articles, and done general research on the fish I'm considering - it's time to get a little feedback.

I've agreed to adopt my gf's Electric Yellow as it is being picked on by her Red Jewel and just isn't going to hack it in her tank. I've bought a 180L (47 gallon) tank which I will be collecting over the next few days and beginning to set up soon. My gf didn't research much beyond the Red Jewel she had such a crush on, and so can't help me too much with suggestions.

At this stage, I'm looking at getting a couple more Electric yellows, a pair of Dolphin cichlids (or similar), possibly a pair of syndonitis catfish, and perhaps one more species. I have a shortlist of potentials that would theoretically be fine - but are there obvious choices that people think would go with this group, giving me approximately 8-9 fish total (this seems to be reasonable from what I've read given the size).

One more question - what substrate is likely to be best with this group? My gf changed from black gravel to crushed coral after a couple of weeks, but doesn't seem to think that it will be ideal in this set-up. I'm not sure what the pros and cons of various substrates are (other than appearance) and can't seem to find much info on it.

Thanks for any suggestions, I'm sure I'll have more questions as I search in advance for everything I need and begin cycling my tank over the next couple of weeks.
