I am new to Cichlids and need help... - 2008/04/01 18:55 Hi, I bought my first aquarium a few weeks ago. I bought 8 Cichlids from a mixed tank. I am not sure of the species. They had them all together at the pet store, so I assumed they would be ok together. I have talked to several people at several different fish stores and I keep getting different advice. I have a 10 gallon tank, I used live plants, one of which the fish destroyed within a week. I have 2 gargoyles and a castle to give them more to hide behind. I feed them once a day, I used the drops to remove the chlorine from the water, but still 2 days ago I found one dead. Yesterday I noticed the 1 of the 7 remaining fish is nowhere to be found, which is a puzzle to me unless they ate it? Just now I noticed another was dead. I have seen one of them being far more aggressive than the rest, all are about the same size, the mean one only slightly bigger than the others. (1.5") Like I said I am new and can't figure out why my fish are dieing, it may be some simple thing I am overlooking, or just don't know due to inexperience. Please help. Thanx - Elvisjr

Re:I am new to Cichlids and need help... - 2008/04/02 12:07 Hey man first of all your aquarium is way to small a 10 gallon couldnt even house one cichlid.... cichlids are fish that need space and alot of it.. they are very territorial so your dominant fish is probaly killin off the rest and also your fish are probaly stressed out from the limited space they have... 8 cichlids need atleast a 50 gallon tank or you can get a 30 gallon and have 4 so they can each have there own space and be happy... also the ph has to be above 7.5 and make sure you remove the amonia from your tank cause amonia can kill your fish quick.... more info on cichlids visit this website they will give you information on each cichlid and can help you find out wich ones you have. the web site is AQUARIUMLIFE.NET this website will give you all the information you need cause cichlids are kinda hard to maintain you need just the right set up... SOLUTION! BIGGER TANK, CHECK PH, GOOD FILTRATION, REMOVE AMONIA.

Re:I am new to Cichlids and need help... - 2008/04/02 15:24 Thanx for the reply, I really should have done a bit more research before buying the fish I did. I will be upgrading tanks in about a month. Thanx for the info.
