Get Paid to Write About Your Cichlids Print E-mail
Written by Administrator
Share your cichlid keeping experience with us, and you'll be rewarded for it. Not only will you have the satisfaction of educating people worldwide, but you'll get paid doing it! You can write about your cichlids, your new aquarium, (we all want to hear about that new bow-front fish tank), your new aquarium filter or skimmer, or even simple things like aquarium pumps and heaters.

How does this work?

We are setting up this site so that ad revenue is shared between all content authors.

This site uses Google AdSense to serve relevant ads for the content on the page. Google pays AdSense publishers on a per click basis as well as per impression. If an author has an AdSense account, 50% of the ads shown will be linked to the author's Adsense ID.

Why should I write for you?

Well, you could write content for your own site, and get a few visitors. But wouldn't you rather be part of what could potentially be the largest resource for cichlid information? As we build a network of articles and links, you'll benefit from the thousands of visitors reading your articles, and your ads will receive far more exposure than if tey were simply placed on a small personal site!

I don't have an Adsense account!

Don't let that stop you! Even if you do not have an Adsense account, you can sign up for one at anytime, and the ad engine will automatically begin serving your ads once you let us know of your Adsense ID.

Why are you doing this?

Our goal is to become the #1 source in the world for information on keeping and breeding cichlids. Seeing as there are well over 2000 known species of cichlids, it would take years to generate this amount of information. Besides, as fellow hobbyists we want the information that's most useful, the experience of other hobbyists. So sharnig ad revenue is our way of thanking you for your contributions.

How much do I have to write?

We will post guidelines on a few simple criteria required per article (size, color, aggressivenes, etc). Besides that, you can contribute as much or as little anecdotal information as you'd like. Keep in mind, users will be able to post comments on published information, so make sure it's accurate!

How do I set it up?

First you need to register on this site. Then you need to contact the editor, supply your username and Adsense Client ID. You will then be assign 'Author' rights, and can begin submitting articles immediately. We will work to automate this process into the sign-up phase.

I'm worried about you having my AdSense Client ID.

Your client ID is publicly available in the source of any page that has your AdSense ads. We do not benefit in any way by having your Adsense ID.

I look at the HTML source on posts I've made and I never see my AdSense Client ID.

The system will never display your own AdSense Client ID to you (as long as you are logged in). This is to prevent people from violating the Adsense terms and conditions (specifically the part about clicking your own ads).

Hi we just recently decided to go with south american cichlids. We have had other tropical fish in the past, but wanted something new. We got our first batch of fish from pets mart here in town and they seem to be doing great! only thing is in a two week time frame they have already eaten 60 fish.... Are we feeding them to much? we also bought the flake, and pelets, they really dont like either. Also we would like to have plants but not sure which ones the wouldnt tear up last time we had live plants our fish kept tearing them up. Also should we add medium/large rocks for them to hide in like caves. or what? We just really need help all over!!! Please email me: martineztrio@grandecom.net
krissy (Unregistered) 2010-07-27 21:19:40

yes u r and quit feeding them live because it puts them in huntting mod and if u have a smaller fish it wil become lunch for them. have u tryed the sticks or the african chiclid flakes and try blood wrom usually centrals love blood worms. any of the plastic plant will work they wont dig them up or eat them. add lime stone or drift wood to ur tank whatever u do DO NOT put lava rock or sandstone anything really scrathy central will rub up against it and then ull be buy antibiotics. make ur own caves out of lime stone thats what me and y husband both do. if u have any questions or concerns please contact us at horsewhisper_1975@att.net
cichlid disease
ash (Unregistered) 2008-01-20 04:40:18

i have recently bought 23 malawi cichlids for my tank and come have fungus (white stuff) growing on hteir mouths and sides. Can this be fatal? Is this to be expected in a new tank?
I don't want my fish to die!
white stuff
angelaerith (Registered) 2008-04-09 19:22:39

You probably know by now, but the white fluffs are most likely ich. Ich will spread to all the fish and kill them in a matter of days if not treated and separated, and even then there is no guarantee. It is a very deadly disease.
White stuff??
Frontosa (Registered) 2008-10-22 14:56:43

Actually, if it looks like grains of salt, it's Ich, but if it looks like miniature cotton balls, it is indeed a fungal infection. The term "new tank" concerns me however, as it makes me wonder if you have allowed the nitrification cycle to complete its process before introducing expensive fish? Your local pet store employess can usually tell you from an accurate description of the illness what it is, and what to use to resolve it. Best to go to a privately owned pet store rather than someplace like Petsmart however, in my own experience, as a privately owned store is usually run by people with a more sincere interest in the livestock. I hope this helps. Good luck.
Bl3ss Up 18 (Registered) 2009-11-06 17:30:18

Do you have a heater if not its most likely (ick) You can buy medicane and be sure to get a heater this will solve this problem or if you have heater then this is called cotton mouth and u need to take your water to a pet store so they can assit you if u wait to long our fiss will die !!!!!!! good luck
My Baby Mikey
Roe (Unregistered) 2008-04-01 13:33:21

I got Mikey, my 13" Oscar Cichlid three years ago as a fry from Wal-Mart, he currenly lives in a 55 gallon tank with five other Cichlids, and two very large Plecos. I have tried to breed him many times with no luck, he has almost killed three other Oscars, and has himself almost died four times. He has a "jumping out of the tank" habit, his last "jump" was to escape from a eight inch Texas Cichlid, who I have since moved to another tank. Since then I put the other Cichlids in with him. He seems content. I was wondering, can an Oscar breed with other Cichlid breeds? In the tank with him is a five inch Convict, I raised from egg. He has been showing signs of the breeding dance for the last four months, can these star-crossed lovers breed?
angelaerith (Registered) 2008-04-09 19:24:23

By breeding dance, do you mean vibrating? That can also be a display of aggression, so he may be behaving territorial instead of looking for a mate.
Mikey
Roe (Unregistered) 2008-04-11 16:21:29

No, I mean breeding dance, vitrating, trying to "tug of war", and the "tail slapping" all of the things I have seen my breeding pair of Convicts do. I understand that just vibrating is a form of argression. This is the whole dance. But to me it does not make sense as the Oscar is three times the size of the Convict (Mindy) he seems to be showing affection for. Mikey also has been keeping "Mindy" in the corner of the tank, where the breeding rock is. When she tries to swim out of the corner, he sort of wrangles her back in and makes sure none of the other fish get near her. I asume its a her as Mikey has been seen, "fertilizing" eggs before.
Bl3ss Up 18 (Registered) 2009-11-07 09:42:13

yes they can there just like humans just because you put the same cichlid in the tank dont mean he's goin to mate the fish will pick who they wont too mate with but in some cases the babies come out sterile they (male) cichlid Good Luck with your hybrid

16fish (Unregistered) 2009-03-30 18:26:11

Hello, I have a 55 gallon acrilic tank with convict cichlids in it. There are 16 of them. I was given the tank by a friend that was moving and could not take them. I am wonering, the fish bicker quite a bit, is this too many fish for this tank. I read somewhere that there should be a certain amount of fish per gallons of water. I just wanted to see what other people have to say about this. Thanks.
krissy (Unregistered) 2010-07-27 21:09:58

dear you have way too many fish it is 1 inch of fish per gallon of water. i have a 65 and i only have 6 fish. my husband has a 55 gallon and he only has 6 in it we also have plenty of places for them to hide u need to reduce ur numbers drastically and that will reduce the stress on the fish and up the quality of water giing them a longer happier life and they will be less prone to aggresive behavior and sickess
convicts

to 16 fish
nena (Unregistered) 2009-05-23 09:57:58

Hi. 16 fish seem alright for a 55 gal tank. I believe they each need approximately 3inches of personal space a piece. African Ciclids are semi-agressive fish. I would strongly suggest that you have enough hiding space for them all. If not, they will fight for territory eventually killing other fish in the tank. Hope this was helpfull.
Yogi Beez (Unregistered) 2009-09-02 12:49:10

Very few AFRICANS are Semi-Aggressive, they all tend to be straight AGGRESSIVE especially when breeding and when there is one of the SAME species in the tank. If there is one dominant male in your tank it may and more than likely will affect the coloration of the less dominant males, making they more dull and firing up less.

Sand For Cichlids
Yogi Beez (Unregistered) 2009-09-02 12:43:22

Hi I recently bought some Coral Sand for my African Cichlids. I am using the sand as a buffer to help maintain correct PH, plus it was pretty cheap. I tend to only really like the Nyererei and Astatotilapia breed of cichlids, basically I like there Vibrant color and its what I am using the sand with. Although I do have on Powder Blue Mubana which is very aggressive.

The sand that I purchased was previously use in a sal****er set up. I bought 50 Lbs. at $.50 a Lb. I put it all in a clean bucket and rinsed it until the water ran out pretty clear. I put it in the tank and only added rocks, I personally do not use live plants my fish tear them up and they end up looking very ugly. I added the water and let it sit with the water aggitator and filter with out sponge run to circulate water. I did this for bout 30 mins. before I added fish.

I added all the fish at once, they did not seen to notice the sand until the next day. When I veiwed them 2 days later I had noticed they started to burrow alot then when I had rocks, and they all seemed more lively. With the sand they are able to see more food that falls to the floor of the tank and they sift through the sand more. This is my experiece and feel its a great alternative to rock and DEFINITELY Recommend to anyone with Africans.

Sketchpad7573 (Registered) 2009-09-28 21:37:09

Hey guys, glad you decided on africans. Are they cichlids? You just said fish that's why I'm asking. Anyway I'm hopeing you got those babies in at least a 55 gal or so because most of them will get about 4" or bigger. Although I got 26 hap fry about 1/4" long in a 14 gal and they're thriving. That may also depend on your knowledge. Think if you'd like a better reply post some more info on species, tank size, filtration, what your feeding them also water quality. In my experience, your little ones should be all over that tank. You may have some issues.
Our new cichlid journey!!!
scottdeby (Registered) 2009-09-25 08:36:50

I am new to this web site and so happy to have found it. I used to have fish when I was growing up but we never had cichlids and if we did I do not remember them. What I do remember about the fish we had, is that we found them to be sort of boaring (no offense to other fish hobbyist), but I wondered why they did'nt have much color or personality. With the research that we are doing right now the cichlid fish sound WONDERFUL!!! Lots of color and different personalities, so many to choose from.
My husband just bought me a new 45 gallon bow tank and its really cool. We now are finished with the setup. The first thing we did was to rinse the gray gravel. We were told that the gray color is a good and natural choice, which tends to bring out the color of the cichlid fish. After the gravel was rinsed completly then we placed it into the tank. Next, we bought about 80 lbs of lace rock and rinsed the rock untill the water ran clear. We then placed that rock in the tank. We did not add plants because we were told the cichlids species will just dig them up anyways. Finally, we added our water, conditioner and neutralizer. This was about a week ago. About 4 dats ago we put some minnows in the tank to create a better even enviorment for the new fish we are going to put in our tank. Of course before we introduce the new cichlids to our tank we will have to remove and return the minnows to the fish store where we bought them or I fear they may become fish food for the new cichlids. Today I will be taking a sample of the water from tank and will have it tested to make sure that everything is the way it is supposed to be to introduce our new fish.
This is really where our new journey begins!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My husband and I are starting to reaserch and decide how many of these cute little fellows we want to bring home. We think maybe 12 might be a good choice for the size of our tank. The next choice we will have to make is which type of cichlid and how many of each do we want. I understand there are at least 1400 different kinds. I guess we will have to think about this one. It would be nice to have a male and female but, that may be difficult to figure when the fish are only 1 to 2 inches long.
In closing, I plan on keepng you all informed about this new journey we are about to be embarked on. So if anyone has any suggestions or comments please reply. I think it is going to be alot of fun and we are really looking forward to it.
krissy (Unregistered) 2010-07-27 21:02:50

chiclids really dont dig up plants i have africans and my husband has centrals and we have yet to have a plant dug up. they like plants because it gives them some where to hide. honey for a 45 gallon with all the rock u have in there u really only need maybe four. rule f thumb with all fish is 1 inch of fish per gallon of water. dont for get to subtract for ur gravel rocks and plants and deco.
Ur tank
Sketchpad (Unregistered) 2009-10-09 01:04:38

Hey guys, I know a good bit about the a. cichlids. You did good for puting the feeders in the tank first. My recommendation is to cycle you're tank for at least a month with gold fish. There probly the dirtyiest fish you can get, and dirt cheap! If u cycle it & u loose some then ur only looseing pennys instead of dollars. Then you can figure out what's goin on in the cycle! Allways cycle with cheap fish. U can learn alot from this and when u want to get your picky fish you'll have done some more research and you'll know what to do with your new tank. Hope that helps some. Hate to see peeps loosing money. Again allways cycle your tank with feeder goldfish and I'd bet any money if you do your research on how to take care of them and in the meanwhile research the fish you want, you will be very happy with the outcome!

ive owned many con's in my 8 years in the hobby. ive learned that most of the the info i found on them was wrong so i stared to experiment. ive learned they will adapt to any water con. can live in temps from the low 60s to low 90s,can live with about any other type of fish. it is all on how they are raised. u can stunt there gromth by keeping them in small tanks, the temp means the most to con's agression.

Cichlid Breeding
Robert (Unregistered) 2011-08-10 11:25:12

Cichlid Breeding i've found often happens naturally in the right tank conditions. Most important thing to have set up is a fry tank and a grow out tank to raise the new fish in before adding them to the main community tank.
