Scientific name: Cyphotilapia frontosa (Kigoma)

Common name: 7-Stripe Frontosa

Region: Lake Tanganyika (Deep Rocky Habitat)

Size: max 15 inches (37 centimetres). Males are larger, with a more pronounced hump on the forehead.

Altolamprologus calvus (Black) Color: black and white striped (7 black bands), blue fins and mouth

Water Chemistry: pH: 8.6, hard water

Temperature: 75-77

Aggression: mildly aggressive

Compatibility: Any other fish that enjoys a high protein diet, is not too hyper, and is not small enough to become a meal for the frontosa will make a good tankmate. Some good aquarium friends: C. Moori (blue dolphin), P. Phenochilus, in fact most of the Lake Malawi Haplochromines will do well with frontosa. From Lake Tanganyika, larger A. Calvus and A. Compressiceps also due quite well due to their slow movement and defensive nature. They are not good with Tropheus species

Diet: Piscivorous. There are plenty of good foods: brine shrimp, black worms, glassworms, silversides, all make good supplements. Give your fish some variety.

How to breed: Apparently frontosa are not extremely difficult to breed. Simply put, the more females you have to males, the more fry you may produce. Frontosa are polygamous spawners and are not pair-forming.

General: I've always loved keeping Frontosas. They are beautiful and graceful aquarium fish. I used to have a male that was 11 inches long. When he'd feed, he'd stick his head out of the water and I'd pet him. I haven't yet bred them though, maybe in the future!

I have a pair of blue frontosa cichlids. I was not trying to breed them but have found many eggs on the filter and side of the aquarium. How can I keep the mother and father from eating the eggs/ fry without disturbing the process?

Are you sure the eggs are from the Frontosas? They are mouthbrooders, so you shouldn't be finding eggs in the aquarium, the female should be storing them in her mouth.

If you want to ensure their survival, strip the eggs from the female's mouth, and hatch them yourself in an empty fish tank, suspending the eggs in a fish net above an air stone. The stream of air & circulated water will keep the eggs from rotting

I have 1 frontosa, pair of red parrot, a pair of red oscars, 1 silver arowana, 2 silver dollars, 1 gold severum & 1 black shark, my parrots keeps bullying my frontosa, do you think i should keep one more frontosa so that they stop bullying my frontosa?

frontosas tend to be aggressive with each other. if you add one frontosa they will tend to kill each other. add at least 2 more.
you shouldnt have those in the
frontosa keeper (Unregistered) 2008-09-18 19:03:21

They shouldnt be in the same tank togather you should remove them and get a seperate tank for the frontosa! Parrots are convicts and are very agressive! your oscars will have a problem with them too. Oscars are central american breeds, they should not be kept in the same tank as the frontosa. even if your not having problems they will eat the young! which will cost you Lots of money!

I Think the 6 striped one or " Mbuna cichlids" and yes u can put them with your africans , i have 3 with my africans and they are ok , they are known to be a bit more calm then the africans but you should be fine . All fish are diff and all tanks are diff so iam not possitive but you SHOULD be ok

Yes you can !!! some people say you can not but TRUST ME i did it many times , Just make sure you scrub them in hot water with a brush ( No Chemicals ) and then BOIL them for about 15min then let cool completely cause they will hold hear for a LONG time. Then once they are cooled down your good to go . Just keep a eye on your PH and make sure it doesnt go up

I have a Frontosa and 2 gold severum, 7 tiger barbs(although I know they will be eaten) and a Parrot fish, the parrot used to bully the Front but i used a divider to divide the parrot from the rest and fed the front and barbs more so they can grow faster. Now none of them bully any fish.

It really makes my blood boil that people would spend so much money on their fish wihtout doing any research. Come on people,do a little reading before you put one of these fish in you little 40 gallon tank. You need to have at least 90 gallons of water for these guys to grow. And you should only pair them with fish from the same lake.. or country!!!

I am thinking of getting 2 frontosas are they ok 2 put in a community tank with african cichlids
Anonymous (Unregistered) 2010-03-30 15:29:57

yeah depending which species you put them in with, carlo! maybe the tank is two small. you need to have loads of rocks hiding places, with cichlids as they are really terrortorial. less the fish you have the more aggression there is in the tank. the more fish you have carms them down!
And maybe you put 2 males in with a dominant male thats why they are fighting :P hope this helps

MIKE (Unregistered) 2010-04-21 16:05:52

CYPHOTILAPIA GIBBEROSA OR THE SIX-STRIPED FRONTOSA IS A SLOW GROWING FISH. THEY SHOULD BE KEPT IN A VOLUMINOUS ENVIRONMENT.THEY REALLY CANNOT BE SEXED UNTIL A LENGTH OF APPROX.6-8 INCHES IS AQUIRED.THEY LIKE TO DIG AND SPIT OUT SAND OR GRAVEL BURROWING UNDER ROCKS OR BEHIND SLATE.I DON'T RECCOMEND FINDING UNKNOWN SUBSTRATE TO PUT IN WITH EXPENSIVE FISH.
MIKE (Unregistered) 2010-04-21 16:19:32

TO CARLO:
YOUR ORIGINAL FISH CONSIDER THE TANK AS THEIRS. YOU PUT NEW FRONTOSA IN AND THEY ARE CONSIDERED INVADERS.ONE WAY TO STOP THE AGGRESSION IS TO CHANGE THE SETUP OR IF THAT DOES NOT WORK TAKE ALL ROCKS AND ORNAMENTS OUT COMPLETELY.THIS LEAVES NO TERRITORY TO DEFEND.GIVE IT TIME IF YOU SEE THINGS CALM DOWN YOU CAN START REPLACING ROCKWORK.
