Haplochromis Species 44 (Red Tail)

Haplochromis species 44 "Red Tail"

This fish has been called by several names, but most people have chosen to refer to them as Haplochromis sp. 44 "Red Tail." or "Thick Skin" They look like a Hap and the fins are red. Good enough.

These fish are/were found on the north and east coastlines of Lake Victoria and inhabits the shallow water near the shore. They are considered extinct in the wild. "Red Tails" are very aggressive fish and are extremely colorful when they square off against each other and when they breed. They are hardy fish, and prolific spawners, which has made them the most popular Victorian Cichlid in the hobby, at least in North America. Certainly my favorite.

"Red Tails" display a whole spectrum of colors, unrivaled by any other species, even saltwater, but what’s most interesting to me about these colors is that they are always changing as the fish matures.

As for breeding, they are typical mouthbrooders with the exception that this fish spawns at a surprisingly early age. I have found females in my tank that were holding at 1-inch in length.

Diet: Carnivore

Gender Differences: Dimorphic

Maximum Size: 5"

Temperature: 78-82°F

They have red tails which is attractive but they are really carnivorous like piranha but i hope not that wild. This African cichlid breeds too right?

They are also commonly known as "Peacocks" because of their bright colors. I have one in my 55 gallon along with a Dolphin, an Electric Yellow and an Electric Blue. I find that while it is a somewhat agressive fish, it also keeps the peace in the tank.

I bought a thick skin jus the other day and it was very colorful. But when we got home the color has disappeared. So now he's like a white color with gray stripes. And it's been like that for the past two days. Any idea what's going on.

They probably aren't thick skins. I have a thicksin male and he is the most aggressive fish in the tank and his colours are constantly changing like a chameleon. I suggest you bring him back to the store and return him for somthing else. I'd go to another store or find a breeder.

THe females are grey with some dots on them and the males are colourful.

Hi,

I live in Mississauga, Ontario. If you want to buy them from me. There are pet shipping companies and you can pay to ship however many you want including the cost of some fry. The fry are growing fast and are already swimming around in little schools. They are big enough to eat flake. I raised them on brine shrimp, flake, japanese fry food powder, so that they will be healthy. None of my fry died.. All of them are healthy.

If you are interested, I could send yuo a picture of parents. THey are prolific breeders and you could sell where you .

I also feed them microworms. It is important to give them a variety of foods when they are fry to avoid health problems in the future and give them good colouration.

I do water changes daily and clean the bottom of the tank daily. They are big enough so that they cannot be sucked into a filter, but not big enough yet so that their colours are showing. I'm waiting for their colours to show to determine the sexes. I'm selling the fry for $7 bucks each and you can pay the shipping. I don't think it will cost tht much to ship because they are weightless.

If you are interested, I can send you pics and if you want to weight until they are bigger and can be sexed, I will give you my email address.
