Scientific name: 'Cichlasoma' octofasciatum

Common name: Jack dempsey, listed also as Nandopsis octofasciatum

Region: Central America - South Mexico, Guatemala, Belize and Honduras

Size: max 9 inches

Color: The coloration darkens as the fish matures, from light gray/tan with faint turquoise flecks, to a dark gray/purple. The flecks become very bright, and are usually iridescent blue, green, and gold. The dorsal and anal fins of mature males have long, pointed tips, similar to the convict cichlid. Females lack these long tips.

Jack Dempsey cichlid

Water Chemistry: pH: 7-8, soft water

Temperature: 76-80 (26-28)

Aggression: Very Aggressive> It's quite often difficult to find other fish that can be kept in the aquarium without becoming fish food!

Compatibility: Other large South American cichlids, that can hold their own in the fish tank.

Diet: Omnivorous

How to breed: Within a group, a pair can take up to a year to decide to pair off and breed. Give your Jack Dempseys as large a tank as possible. If the male gets too rough, the female needs room to get away. Provide plenty of cover, such as rocks, caves and fake plants (if you have to). They're substrate spawners, and like many Central American cichlids, you can expect many fry! Both parents will help incubate the eggs and guard the fry when they hatch.

General: The Jack Dempsey cichlid is one of the most commonly known and kept cichlids (or tropical fish for that matter) in the aquarium. The Jack Dempsey cichlid is easy to care for in the aquarium but considered unsuitable for inexperienced aquarists, since it may be difficult to control its aggressive temperament/behaviour. Jack Dempsey cichlids are often kept in their own dedicated aquariums rather than community aquariums or habitat aquariums, but you are able to keep this cichlid with other species - if you select tank mates very carefully. Avoid standard community aquarium species, since they will be bullied by the Jack Dempsey cichlid.

Carrie (Unregistered) 2009-09-25 20:35:57

I was wondering...... did they grow big in the tank together or did you introduce them when they were grown already?

How can you tell the difference between male and female Jack Dempseys?
Mr
Alan (Unregistered) 2009-02-05 15:14:39

the male also usually lacks the spangling on lower part of its head and the female doesnt the pangles go right to bottom unlike the males cheeks

The Females have a lot less color and their fis arent as pointed and long. Also, my male has more red on his dorsal than the female.

My Dempsey's are fine with 2 small aquatic frogs and around 7 zebra danios.
Kami (Unregistered) 2007-12-09 12:35:56

Be careful with the Dempsey and the danios. My Dempsey is probably about 4 or 5 inches long and I had two zebra danios in with him and they were fine for about a month or two and now he has eaten both of them.

A MALE JACK DEMPSEY HAS 2 BLACK SPOTS ONE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE BODY THE OTHER AT THE BASE OF THE TALE. I HAVE A MALE
Mike (Unregistered) 2009-09-22 19:22:37

That is not always true. I have a 3 year old mated pair. My mail has no such black spots. The most reliable way to tell is the fin shape. Males like most cichlid species have a long slender body with a flailing dorsal fin with a point while the female tends to have a more rounded body and rounded off fins.
The color can also be an indication - Males will have more coloration along the side of their bodies while the female tends to have most of her color (Especially while breeding) on her face with the body turning a dark black. (Similar face color to a Green Terror.

Big AL (Unregistered) 2009-02-17 11:38:19

I have 2 JAck Dempsey's(one about 3inches and the other about 2) in the company of a male convict(2.5 inches), 2 much larger oscars (6 inches(albino) and 4.5 inches), as well as to small yellow african cichlids and another african cichlid thats blue and has a hump on head. I also have a large Platy (mickey mouse, and its the biggest ive ever seen had him a long time) and he swims always next to the smalled Dempsey all the time. The only aggression in my tank came about 2 months ago when my oscar got big enough to eat all my guppies (I kinda wanted them to get ate). They occasional chase happens but thats about it.
D. Martin (Unregistered) 2009-11-15 07:32:22

I'd like to know the size of your tank. Sounds like you have a disaster tank. You got all kinds of incompatible fish. Not to mention alot of those cihclids grow large. I gop you got a tank that is 200 gallons or over for them later on.
Forgot some tank mates
Big Al (Unregistered) 2009-02-18 06:44:40

1 LG Blue Gorami(4inches)(Runs the tank), and 3 peppered Cory Catfish (I know eventually they may get eat but ill move them out by then, and they keep my tank pretty clean).

MY JD IS ALONE IN A TANK IT IS 10 GAL. I AM NEW TO THIS SO I NEED HELP. IS IT NORMAL FOR IT TO STAY AT THE TOP OF THE TANK WHEN IT IS JUST NEW TO THE TANK???
dweezil (Unregistered) 2009-02-23 21:20:53

nope, staying at the top isnt normal...your fish will die...guaranteed...
Anonymous (Unregistered) 2009-03-02 22:06:35

JD SHOULD BE IN 55 GALLONS AT LEAST. YOUR FISH IS DYING FROM SITTING IN ITS OWN CRAP LITTERALY. GET A BIGGER TANK ASAP
ur jd
blaqq313 (Unregistered) 2009-07-19 15:28:06

your jd was at the top because it needs oxygen and in water oxygen rises to the top. get a bubble machine and it adds oxygen into the water.

If i get 3 jack dempseys how big should the tank be and whats a good diet for one i heard feeder fish get them sick is that true in the US.
D. Martin (Unregistered) 2009-11-15 07:29:04

3 JDs will need a tankl of 150 minimum as adults. Males grow to 10-12 inches and females from 7-8 inches. Feeder fish usually have parasites and a bunch of other diseases. Plus they arent even that nutritious. Try some cichlid pellets like hikari gold, bloodworms, krill, and things like that.

ok first queston 100g for 3 full jd's ,if you want to do feeder do your own, feeders r malnurished and r pack in a tiny tank. 4 yoour own mollies, platies, guppies r great choices.

ps(put feeders in a smaller tank about 20g).

scuba steve (Unregistered) 2009-05-10 00:43:26

ive never heard feeder fish made fish sick? is it maybe because there is some stress in the guppies tank and when you transer them into your cichlid tank they spread ick?

Hi I have had a jack dempsey for 8 months. I bought him when he was 1.2 inches, he almost got killed by my 4.5 inch red devil.. so I saved him and rented a nother 55 gallon tank..he had his own tank for 4 months then he grew 5 inches (same size as the red devil) then I put him back with the red devil. the red devil locked his lips with the dempsey..the dempsey took control, and won the battle. 2 more months came by the dempsey killed the red devil.. surprising! but sad. BE VERY CAREFUL WITH THEM! they will get murderous.
Nice fish

I got a female JD and shes 4 inches now. I have her in a 55 gallon with a 4 inch Blue Acara, 3 1/2 Sajica, 2 1/2 inch Sajica and anothr Jack dempsey (sex unknown at around 2 1/2 inches). I plan to get rid of the smaller JD it gets picked on. The 4 inch female I have is a ltitle territorial and hides in this log I have and tries to strike any fish that gets near it. I put in a school of 6 zebra danios and 2 are missing, I think she ate them. I added them as dithers to calm her down. Overall, shes a good fish. For those wanting to know a good way to sex them. The female will lack the pearling/spangling like the males. They jsut wont have as much. Plus their gill plate will generally be covered in more blue. The female will look as if she has a blue beard. Shes also a bit more slender in body shape. Only mix them with fish of similar size and aggression and make sure to give all fish adequate space.

I'm a huge sal****er fish guy I've had sharks rays and exotic fish i've been doing this for 8 years now and the price of having these fish are starting wear down on me especially during the recession. I have a 400 gallon sal****er tank with a wet and dry filter. I was thinking of giving my fish away to a friend and then draining the tank washing it out and filling it up with malawi cichlids. Is this a good idea ? How would I get this across the cycling process? I have sand and lava rock can i just wash it well and fill the tank up?

Please help thank you!

I just bought a male and female. At their tank intro, they seemed lively and comfortable. This was short lived. They've gone into hiding all of the time, they won't eat (spirulina flakes, tried live food too), and they seem to scare very easily. As I am looking closely at them they literally freak out and viciously swim away. I've tested my water and all seems to be o.k. Ph may be a little high. On its way down though. These are really cool fish and I really want to keep them alive and happy!!!! PLEASE HELP!!!!
Jack (female or male)?
eric (Unregistered) 2010-04-17 18:02:18

I have a jack dempsey and from reading everything I believe it is a female, but not certain. It's mostly black but blue specs up towards the face. I also have a male Convict i just put in the tank today. So my questions are...is the dempsey female? are the two fish going to get along? do you think they'll breed? I appreciate any help
thanks

Buy plastic separators or make 'em yourself out of plexiglass. In a pinch use a good plastic bag with cardboard inside.

I keep a 10" male and a 6" female JD with a 8" male and 5" female Green Terror, a 4" female Blue Arca, and a 6" pleco. They are in a 125 gallon aquarium, where they have been for two years. I had the JDs for about a year before I introduced the GTs. They all get along great. Your JD would eat a shrimp or lobster. Go for a pleco, they will cleanup all the algae.
