Re:Hagen Fluval Canister Filter Review - 2007/06/06 11:14 justin,

I have this filter Fluval 304. I think most of the problems with Fluval canister filters can be solved with placing a sponge filter onto the intake pipe/bar. With this method, you have to give up using self prime though. But as you probably know, the filter can start to work without the self prime. I connected the intake hose to Tetra P-II sponge filter. Thanks to the sponge, almost no debris enter into the hose nor the canister filter, which prevents clogging.

Re:Hagen Fluval Canister Filter Review - 2007/06/06 15:51 Doesn't that kind of defeat the purpose of having any filter media then?

Re:Hagen Fluval Canister Filter Review - 2007/06/07 05:17 I for one do not think so. Thanks to the sopnge prefilter, the canister filter can focus on biological (and chemical if necessary) filtration effectively. At least I think it is much easier to just detach and rinse the sponge. Besides, if you often detach the AquaStop and the lid from the Fluval filter, it might wear out the sealing rubber and cause leak in the end.

Since the sponge prefilter is large, I do not have to bother rinsing it often.
