HELP!! My Female gave birth! - 2007/09/28 15:13 Hello, I have had 3 chiclids in a tank for about a year, 2 (what i think are) Jack Demp Chiclids 1 big male, 1 smaller female, and 1 large red devil. well the 2 jacks have had babies, and now my tank is not in good shape, im not sure if the mother or father will eat the fry, and theyre doing a good job at keeping the red devil on the other side of my 35 gallon. what do i do? what fish shall i remove from the tank? obiously the red devil, but do i tak out the mother or the father jack demp? they could even be convicts, im not sure, i dont really pay that much attention to the breeds, the mother and father seem to be fighting, so i have to do something, and soon....can anyone give me advice?? i have another tank waiting, also how long do i keep whatever 2 fish out of my 35 gal, as my other tank is only a 15 gal.

ive attached a pic of mom and dad with fry.
PLEASE HELP!!!

thanks

Re:HELP!! My Female gave birth!! - 2007/09/29 02:30 Well, you may actually be safe not removing them, for a couple of reasons:
1. They're generally good parents. Even though they may fight a little, they should protect the cichlid fry once they hatch.
2. If they bred once, they will again, so I wouldn't worry all that much about losing some of the babies.

Just be careful that the male doesn't get too aggressive and start to actually case damage to the female. In that case you should put a divider in the tank.

Re:HELP!! My Female gave birth! - 2007/09/29 05:16 Thanks Justin, The male and female seem to be doing fine with the fry, but its the red devil that im now worried about, ive moved him to my 10 gallon, and ive had to do it faster then i'd like to, i had just set up the 10 gal when the male and female parents started attacking my male devil chiclid, he seems to be doing fine, most likely right stressed out, but hiding in his rocks.
how long am i looking at for my fry to grow?
im not as big into fish as i used to be, and this is the first time any of my fish have had fry.
also what do the fry eat?
i also have a small alge eater in the tank, is this ok?
the alge eater stays on the other side of the tank, whenever he comes near the fry, the male chases him away.

thanks

Re:HELP!! My Female gave birth! - 2007/09/29 07:38 It will be well over a month before they're large enough to not be viewed as snack food!

You can feed them pulverized flake food. Just crush it up into a fine powder, mix a little water to make it a paste, and inject it into the water near them.

The algae eater should be fine.
