Help!!!!!! they all died!!!! - 2007/08/30 07:11 Ok here is my problem. i started a cichlid tank about a month ago, it's a 55 gallon. Now i have never had just a cichlid tank, but i do have 2 other tanks. I originally bought 3 fish, i waited 2 to 3 weeks to add any more, just to make sure. So i then bought 2 more. Everything was OK unil about 2 days ago, and it was like they didn't want to swim anymore, and became very uneventful. As of this morning, all 5 fish died suddenly. The last one was laying on the bottom of the tank twitching. I think i got some poison or something in the water. Please help, I don't know what i did wrong. It was so sudden, cichlids are very expensive to keep replacing. Anybody have any suggestions?

Re:Help!!!!!! they all died!!!! - 2007/08/30 11:43 When was the last time you did a water change?
How much were you feeding them?

Re:Help!!!!!! they all died!!!! - 2007/09/02 18:22 feeding them 2 times a day, once in the morning and once at night. Just started the tank, about 2 weeks before I got the fish, don't think it needed a water change.

Re:Help!!!!!! they all died!!!! - 2007/09/04 04:06 Was it all new filters, gravel and equipment? There's a good chance that the tank wasn't done cycling, that there was a bacteria bloom.

Re:Help!!!!!! they all died!!!! - 2007/09/04 05:46 new gravels, everything else was slightly used. i let the water cycle for 2 weeks before i started adding fish. That seems like a sufficient amount of time right. Plus they all lived for at least 3 weeks before they started dying.

Re:Help!!!!!! they all died!!!! - 2007/09/04 05:51 Your best bet would be to take a sampling of the water to a local fish/pet store. They should be able to do a water test and let you know what the contaminant was.

Re:Help!!!!!! they all died!!!! - 2007/09/07 06:37 That would certainly explain the deaths. I'm sorry to hear that, hope it all gets sorted out.

Re:Help!!!!!! they all died!!!! - 2007/09/11 09:00 Yes vey upset that they all died, he said it's natural for the tank to go through some changes. But my fish store is so awesome that they gave me credit for all the fish that died, so i have a beautiful tank again.

Re:Help!!!!!! they all died!!!! - 2008/01/22 19:50 Looks like im a late poster on this thread, but never-the-less, sorry to hear about your fish.

Also, for future references you may want to look into getting a nitrite tester, which allows you to accurately read the nitrite level in your aquarium.

I use the Red Sea Fresh Labs kit, it allows me to test my pH level, ammonia level, and nitrite level. You can purchase the Nitrite tester separately, but I just find it more convenient to buy the whole kit since its cheaper in the long run. I myself am a newbie, and this kit is pretty easy to use so it's helped me out alot in keeping my fish healthy. Plus, it's better buying one of this kits before having your fish die on you and having to go out and start all over again.

As far as the fish store is concerned, I can't blame them for giving you store credit, since they should have given you the Detoxifying liquid when you first purchased the fish.
