cranky cichlids - 2009/08/20 17:41 hi all!

we recently lost our first fish - a female neon spot. we actually had to take her out of the tank ourselcves becuase i dont think she would have made it. she was struggling to swim (poor bugger had her tail bitten off, and one of her side fins as well - like a tailess nemo).

we have a variety of cichlids in a 4ft tank and they seemed to all be happy together and we didnt have any problems at all. we checked all the compatibilities etc etc etc.... i think we spent more time researching than setting it up!

recently though, it looks like some of the males have been getting cranky, and facing off against each other. we have a couple cobalt blues, who would chase the (now dead) neon spot, as well as the male neon spot wanting to have a crack at her too. is it normal for the cobalts to chase the female neon spot?

should we limit the amount of flat rock and maybe drop the temp a little to discourage the breeding environment for a while until things settle?

we'll be reorganising the tank again tonight, as we have tried a couple times before as well when introducing the new ones to avoid any territory issues.

anyone have any hints to stop this schoolyard tank behaviour?

thanks all!!!

Re:cranky cichlids - 2009/12/15 15:01 hi i have a friend who has a community invironment of cichlids like peacocks etc at one stage all her fish started fighting after living a long happy period of time together, she lost quite a few fish even one she had had for over 3 years in the end the reason for all the fighting and dead fish was that she had one female amoung many males and they all fought to bread with her, she ended up with so many babies to choose from and had to sell the remaining to the pet shop.
i no she is now happier having fish she has fully bread herself than fish she bought from the shop, depends which way you want to think about it.
yes dropping temperature does help with lowering mating however at this time of year for me my water is warmer than the heaters are set some datys i have to put cold water into my tank to cool it down a little
