Re:Breeding African cichlids - 2007/03/14 13:14 lol yes that would be quite inhuman for you to mouthbrood a fish. I am quite interested into stripping the female(fish), will this article be written up anytime soon as I need all the possible help I can get as I feel this will end up in a failure if I do decide to attempt.

Re:Breeding African cichlids - 2007/03/14 13:18 Alright, that would be great. I will check back tomorrow and hopefully it is not too late because with my current knowledge it is known that the female will spit the fry before a 4 weeks period and it is overdue now. I appreciate all the help, Thank you. And also, I have discovered strange behavior from the female towards anyone who approaches the tank. It's impression can be described as extremely aggressive attacking the glass and swimming actively. Is this normal and should I worry?

Re:Breeding African cichlids - 2007/03/14 13:20 She is clearly very insecure in her surroundings. This can definitely prevent her from spitting out the fry. I really encourage you to try right away. The biggest piece of advice I can give you is to just be gentle. It won't kill her.

Re:Breeding African cichlids - 2007/03/14 13:23 That may be the overall problem then, If possible, can you give a detailed step to step process and I will try right away. I am very unaware of how to do this as I am new to it so any help would be appreciated. Thank you very much.

Re:Breeding African cichlids - 2007/03/14 13:25 What more do you need to know than what I mentioned? What are you unsure of? Let me know and I can fill it in.

Re:Breeding African cichlids - 2007/03/14 13:30 I am unsure after netting the cichlid what position I hold her in, Do i hold her firmly as fish are quite slippery and is this all done in the water or out? Should I remove her from the tank to a bucket for easier access maybe?

You hold her somewhat firmly, but not squeezing her. Just don't give her any room to move. You hold her across your hand, and wrap your fingers around her. Your index finger is more or less on her forehead, preventing her from slipping down, as you point her head towards the bottom of the tank.

This is all done in the water, you don't want to take the female cichlid out of the water if at all possible, to prevent her from really panicking.

That would be fine to do it in a bucket, but once you've caught her in the tank you probably have no need to using a bucket, except maybe just to keep the cichlid fry separate.

Any more questions?
