big mouth? - 2008/02/08 19:13 I have a fish and it seems like its mouth is swollen or something. It hasn't been wanting to eat. I don't know the sex of my fish. This particular fish has a few little spots on its fin but are very little. I have an all yellow with a black strip on the top fin that has been doing I guess the matin dance for a while. This one does have huge spots on its anal fin. Does this mean that I might have babies in my tank soon? This is the first time this is happening.. I don't want to get too excited. Does amyone have any pic of how they look when they are holding fish in their mouth?

Re:big mouth? - 2008/02/11 14:43 Yes, it sounds like your cichlid has a mouthful of eggs (probably fry by now). I've been digging around online, but have been unable to find a good pic of a female cichlid carrying. If you take a picture of yours we can tell you what kind of cichlid it is and if you are going to have babies soon.

ok I tried my best to take a good pic. Do they usually do like a sucking thing? Because she has been doing that lately and it seems funny like it is trying to reposition the eggs. And it still isn't eating? How long does it take for them to start eating again? If they're eggs what do I do so they survive. I can't afford to buy a new tank and everything. Would a divider work? or something??? its not letting me upload the pic. It says it too big.. can I email it or something? I have a really good pic.

Re:big mouth? - 2008/02/12 10:44 well, you can just resize the pic on your computer and then upload it.

Yes, it's normal for her to move around the eggs in her mouth. She won't eat for weeks while she's carrying them. However, if you get a good close up view in her mouth, you may even see the little cichlid fry!

Also, yes, you can put in a divider, but there's no guarantee they won't get eaten at some point. Do you have lots of rockwork in your aquarium?

Re:big mouth? - 2008/02/19 05:56
Well yeah she def. has babies in her mouth. I sat down for a long period of time and saw babies. They keep trying to come out but she doesn't let them. She sucks and pushes them back. How did you manage to post this pic. I've been tryin but have not succeeded. I have but a divider in the tank and now she has half a tank to herself and the babies. I also had two jewels but they died. I haven't been too suceesful with my fish. I am trying to keep my tank in good condition for the momma fish and babies. I'll keep you guys posted.
