bully cichlids part 2 - 2008/10/02 13:38 My first post got messed up. I was trying to say that even the 3 fish who got picked on wont get along together. Every fish is by itself now in a separate small tank.
(they were all living in a 20 long for 2 yrs without much incident.) there was always a dominant fish but not the viciousness that recently started.
hope someone can help . Is it reasonable to think if I add a bunch more fish that they will all be too distracted and not pick on any one fish or do you think it will be a total war zone?

Re:bully cichlids part 2 - 2008/10/03 23:03 fist of all i would consider a 20 gallon tank, even if it is a long is to small for 3 cichlids. Especialy if they are as aggressive and territorial as you discribe. they need to have space, plus a piece of structure(plant, rock, castle) to call their own. Do not add more fish unless you are getting a bigger tank thats the only way more fish will help. two cichlids for a 20 g tank is probably best. Any fish you add will probably be the first to be attacked

Re:bully cichlids part 2 - 2008/10/05 00:20 Thanks, I am learning ...My tank has lots of rocks, live and fake plants... I also read somewhere in the meantime that adding a school of tiger barbs might help distract the cichlids and keep the aggression down. Bad idea . I tried this and after about a half hour the one remaining cichlid in the 20 gal. started harrassing the tiger barbs. The cichlids are now each in a sep. 5 gal tank and look good and the wounded ones have healed. I am thinking about a 40 gal., that is as big as I can do, but I dont think these 4 fish will ever get along. I am pretty sure they are in the zebra family from looking at fish in the shops.... one is an albino, one is light blue w/ darker vertical stripes, one I think is a red zebra, one is more toned down, brownish orange, that one is the most peaceful, never saw aggression from that one. Usually I see my type of fish in the stores labelled as
'asst african cichlids', hard to find actual specific names and knowledgeable salespeople.

Re:bully cichlids part 2 - 2008/10/05 12:20 40 gallons should be enough for these fish and the aggression will be the same but the fish probably wont't fight as much
