sick fish- help please - 2008/06/02 17:07 I have a variety of 6 cichlids various types. I have a problem with nitrites spiking in my tank every couple of weeks even with two filters (90 gal tank) and weekly water changes. Help... I keep loosing my fish even after a full change out and thorough cleaning of the tank.

Help ... I try to keep my fish healthy and safe and this is driving me nuts.

Re:sick fish- help please - 2008/06/06 05:18 Tips: add live bacteria, lessen feeding, keep substrate cleaned and maybe add crushed coral, check PH which is probably being affected, add uniodized salt to replenish slime coating and only add more salt if making water changes, keep clean charcoal in filters and plenty of air cycling.

Ok if you are weekly doing complete water changes then you are destroying your biofilter and there for going thru new tank syndrome on a weekly basis. There is no chance for the amonia/nirate/nitrite cycle to set up and the necessary bacteria to develop, try down grading to 25% water changes weekly and see if that does not help. When your nitrites are spiking its because your tank is finally cycling which is necessary and by doing a complete water change you are destroying that cycle and starting the tank all over again your fish will never survive this.
