Newbie with a question - 2008/06/23 14:51 Hi, my name is Sharon and I have a 35 gallon cichlid tank, it's been set up for about 6 months and the only problem I've had is an algea bloom. The bloom was taken care of 2 months ago and my water has been fine ever since. I have 6 fish total in the take and today I noticed my blood parrot has what looks like little white heads around her/his mouth, maybe 6 total. She's eating fine but the bubbles around the mouth are bothering me, I don't know what it could be and I don't want her to be sick--does anyone know what it is and what I can do to get rid of it. She/he hides in the one a hollow tree in the middle of the tank and only comes out to eat. There is one other blood parrot in the tank. Any help would really be appreciated. Thanks.

Re:Newbie with a question - 2008/07/02 18:43 It sounds to me like ick.

I just had a massive ick out break about 2 weeks ago and what I did, is that I have a 20 gallon "quarintine" tank
(because I hate blue silicon) and heated it to ~83-84 degrees F. (because ick's metabolism works quicker and causes them to fall off quicker) and started treatment of ICK RID which I think works best but its really all the same, and treat for 10-15 days every 24 hours and 25% water changes between treatments and I alternate treatments with melafix to help with the sores from rubbing the ornaments and gravel but thats really it.

Re:Newbie with a question - 2008/08/18 03:59 Deffinetly sounds like Ich, and it is very contagious, you need to quarentine that fish or your entire community will get it. Also with those kinds of fish I really would recommend upgrading to a larger aquarium quickly or Ich will continue to be a problem, your fish are stressed because they do not have enough room, and you are stunting their growth rate which will lead to their internal organs becoming so large that they will no longer have room inside their bodies for them and will die. Just because a juvinile fish stops growing on the outside due to poor tank conditions, the internal structures are not stunted parrots are meant to be large fish.
