color changing - 2008/01/25 16:32 A few days ago I bought 3 African Cichlids. I've never owned these kinds of fish before so I don't know very much about them. One I picked out was very bright yellow with pitch black stripes. I brought him home and that day I was watching him/her and noticed that his/her stripes had turned very light. I thought he was sick at first, so I kept a close eye on him, which I have continued to do. The stripes seem to fade and reappear. Ranging from pitch black to light grey. Is this normal?

Re:color changing - 2008/01/30 03:25 That's completely normal. Their stripes may increase in intensity of color (or decrease) based on lots of factors, like the kind of food you feed them, the quality of the water, and whether or not they're ready to breed.

I bet that if you fed the cichlids a few earthworms they'd have some nice strong stripes again!

Re:color changing - 2008/01/30 16:45 One of mine (zebra of sorts) goes from pale to nice dark and rich colors all the time.

When it gets into its shaking fits, it gets very pale. Excitement of sorts or stress will cause it to change color. My other ones seem to hold their color well with no fluctuation or non noticeable ...

One is a yellow lab I think and I just got this new one that has black stripes with really vibrant blue in between the black, with black lips. Really neat fish.
