Not a Johannis - 2008/02/20 14:55 Welp, after my experience with the beast (see fry and such) I have been doing some looking around .. And what I have come up with is that the beast , is a female Pseudotropheus demasoni . And when I bought I thought was an electric blue Johannis, really was a male Pseudotropheus demasoni . They are from lake Malawi and are of the Mbuna species .... They of that line are the most aggressive so it seems and really take over the tank .... This female was the smallest of my fish and grew to be the biggest . She was always tough and fearless from the get go... The male showed the same confidence when I put him in the tank .. He just didn't seem afraid ..The beast always liked him and I believe I posted here that she even seemed to protect him if another did decide to chase him around...
Also hey are living happily ever after in the 5er ....

So know I know whats up with them... And also why she was sorta dull. Not real ugly but not fancy ... She has nice yellowish fins and can get a weird purple blue when she is calm ... He is a vibrant blue with black stripes , really neat looking fish...

Thought I would share this...

So what ya think Mum ..........

Re:Not a Johannis - 2008/02/20 15:53 They are a very nice looking fish, but very aggressive. Alot of fish shops dont bother to research the fish and sell them as something they are not. Its not hard to find out on the net and would save alot of wasted time for people who are after a specific species.

Re:Not a Johannis - 2008/02/20 16:13 Well I knew nothing about these fish when I got them... So when I was at the store to add a few to the one I had, the girl said that this fish would look nice.... Guess she didn;t know it was a female...

I may have been told it was a bit aggresive but really don't remember..
I am glad I know know what they are .... and that they are a pair.. vs a hybrid ... I am pretty comfortable that they are the same kind...

Now my yellow lab has decided to do some digging..... ...

I think I will keep them in a tank together , maybe getthem a ten or 15 and just let them be .... then work on the other ten I have maybe get a Mrs yellow lab for the big guy....

Re:Not a Johannis - 2008/02/20 16:51 you would think that the supplier of the fish to the fish store would know what kind of fish they where and tell the fish store.

My mum has a pair of yellow labs, very nice fish. Just be careful when you get a female as they are very similar in all ways to the males.

Are the demasoni in their own tank. Kept in a single species tank with only one male the aggression should be fine. The male will just boss the females around to mate.
