tank temp - 2008/02/20 07:39 Hey guy's...
One of my tanks is running at about 84F ... Little warmer ... The heater is turned down to 76F for the last few days .. The on light is not showing on the tank heater , indicating that it's not needed ..

The room temp varies from low 70 to higher depending on open windows and a little heater I have, that can make the room quite warm if I want....

Three temp gages are showing about the same temp, a digital, a stick on, and a floating thermometer ... I checked the filter to see if the filter motor may be generating more heat and its running cool ...

What do you all think is keeping the tank temp so high... I would like to see it drop to 80/81F ...

iI was wondering if at one time it (heater) was up to high and the coral absorbed heat and is helping maintain that temp , or if the aquarium cover is keeping in heat , I add water on a regular bases because of evaporation ... And I don't make it that hot , though I could check the actual temp of it when I add next time.. Also I keep a gallon all ready and it sits by the tanks so it's easy to add when I see it needs it...

What say you aquarium owners of the world ..... ?

Re:tank temp - 2008/02/20 08:52 Hi, is it summer or winter over there? We are in summer at the moment and my tanks temps have been quite high because of continuous hot days.

Re:tank temp - 2008/02/20 09:39 Winter.... Whopping 20 degrees F here today ,not counting that wind chill.....

Seems to be resting at 82 F at the moment.. the tank temp that is ...

Just put a new heater in my 5g tank so I will be able to compare the two and see if one still runs hotter .....

Re:tank temp - 2008/02/20 11:18 Mum do you stutter ,

I think I figured it out .. The heater I have was still giving off heat even though the on light wasn't on .. I turned it to its lowest at 4:51 eastern standard time, tank temp was 83.2 F.... Now at 5:09 eastern standard time it has already dropped near one degree to 82.4 F ...

So I think I will replace that heater with one like I just got for the 5er.

I like this digital thermometer. . I can just take the sensor and switch tanks ... Reads quick and it's got big numbers so its easy to read ....

Re:tank temp - 2008/02/21 00:28 After a massive study. and documentation of times, temps at those time and whether or not when the light was on the heater, I have discovered that the heaters temp gage was/is off ... by about 10 degrees ......

I have the tank holding steady at 81.0 with the heater set at 74 degrees .... I am going to get a better heater as that really bugs me , not to be able to set it at the temp marked on the heater...

Thought I bought a good one too,but I was wrong ... Going with the thermoplastic housing this time , like the new one in the 5er....

Re:tank temp - 2008/02/21 12:09 My 55 gallon usually stays around 76-80 degrees due to up and down outside temps. I have my tank in the garage. Is this ok? Thanks.

Re:tank temp - 2008/02/21 19:19 Is the garage brick or tin?
If it is tin ,in the summer i think you will have a real problem with the tank temp. It is summer here in australia and my tanks are in the lounge room with the blinds shut and air conditioner on when im home and my tanks are sitting at around 84-86F. Fish seem fine..

Re:tank temp - 2008/02/22 07:49 Nah, it's brick. I keep the door down because I turned it into a lounge for me and my son's. Can open up to air out in summer though if I need to. Plan on getting a portable A/C to put in there for back up.

I would love to visit Australia-seems to be a beautiful place and the people appear to really have great concern for each other and animals-life in general!
