Fry and such - 2008/02/14 13:05 I think my biggest cichlid african , has eggs in her mouth ...Last day this fish has been real aggressive to the other two fish in the tank... really just chasing them around and fighting with my yellow lab ...

I had put some bigger stone over my coral to help stop the big one from digging ... But some how it managed to undermine this stuff and dig anyway ....So I cleaned the tank somewhat today to , in hopes chill the big one out ... So I took out all the larger rock and re shuffled the coral , put the wood back in and my fake plants . Its still pissed ... Usually it will calm down some what if I do that stuff ...

Before I got all the stuff in and it was just coral.. I thought it was digging but instead it looked like it had puked, lol..... Then it sucked it back into its mouth... What I thought I saw was little brownish colored , eggs....

So what's the deal with how they d it ? Does she just get a batch of eggs and hold em in her mouth or does she lay them and they get fertilized and then she stuffs them ? Hows it work with them ?

Re:Fry and such - 2008/02/15 03:05 Waht a turn of events, lol ... Now the yellow lad is chasing the larger one with the eggs around and the shoe is on the other foot.. Like the yellow just got tired of the crap , lol... Now he is acting like he grew a pair .. The black stripe across his eye is more defined then it usually is......

Re:Fry and such - 2008/02/15 11:39 I have a pair of geophagus and she lays the eggs on a rock or something then the male fertilises the eggs and then the next day the female picks up the eggs and starts holding them in her mouth.

Re:Fry and such - 2008/02/15 16:11 My geo's hatch in their mouth about day three but cant swim as they have their egg sack still.About day 7 they can swim but she still holds them in her mouth. This might not be exactly the same for all mouth brooders, but similar. I cant tell you much more as my geo has only held for 5-7 days max. I have read on other sites that the fry will swim in and out of the mouth when they are able. They also return to the mouth when scared. Hope this helps you..

Re:Fry and such - 2008/02/15 19:14 Also they are constantly swirling around what is in their mouth. Looks sorta like they are constantly chewing something
